I read somewhere that the balance shaft covers are not simple bolt-on replacement parts. They are matched to the engine block at the factory? Anybody know anything about this?

That is true.

The block, lower bearing support (girdle), and the balance shaft covers are machined and serialed at the factory as a set.

I suspect that if you were desperate, and careful, and had access to the proper line boring equipment, if you had mismatched parts with the tolerances on the lucky side you might be able to remachine the mismatched components to work together.

I have seen numerous blocks for sale on eBay minus the balance shaft covers, and or the lower bering support, with the Sellers offering the balance of the parts separately or not at all.

As far as I am concerned, any block sold without the matching lower bearing support and balance shaft covers is a total. The cost of trying to find the missing parts, and trying to have them machined to match exceeds the cost of buying a complete set or a tired engine in need of rebuilding.

what you should do is get your engine number and find out which BS cover you need. Then go check out clark's garage for the torque specs.

Thanks guys,

The reason for the question was more to do with "forward thinking" than anything else. I'm going to turbo-charge a 3litre S2 engine and was (I think) mistaken in the belief that the 951 turbo-unit oil supply came from a port on the left balance shaft cover?

Anyway, it's not a massive problem, just like to think in terms of O.E solutions rather than aftermarket ones...when it's possible.

As always, cheers for the insight gohim, much appreciated.
