|
|
Just recently replaced the tensioner on my 931 and noticed that the belt has walked out to the front of the camshaft pulley. It was the newer style tensioner with the necessary shortened bolt. Also, I reused the washer from the previous tensioner/bolt set up, this washer was placed on the outside of the tensioner between it and the bolt so that is where I placed it on the new tensioner set-up.
As I was looking at the timing belt set up I noticed that the tensioner is not exactly in line with the cam and crank pulleys and hence causes the belt to ride on the edge of the cam pulley.
My question is this...do I need some sort of washer behind the tensioner between it and the engine to cause the tensioner to be more in line with the cam and crankshaft pulleys or is the current configuration correct? I read through several posts on the board and the only reason for the belt walking out was a bad tensioner (but mine is new) and I couldn't find any information about the order of washers or if you could place one behind the tensioner to line up the pulleys.
Thanks for any help _________________ 1981 931 |

Yeah ya made me look.
My belt sits right about dead center of the cam sprocket. There is no washer behind the tensioner wheel. There is a thin washer at the front of the tensioner.
Is your belt right at the front edge of the cam sprocket?, or is it hanging over some?
[-And is the new belt exactly the same width as the old one?] _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

The belt runs right on the edge of the cam sprocket, but not over it. IIRC, the new belt is the same width as the older one, but the older belt also ran on the front edge of the sprocket. [I had actually replaced the belt, along with a water pump and a few odds and ends, a few weeks ago but had to reuse the old tensioner (old style as well-who knows how long it had been on there) because I didn't have the proper length (shorter) bolt to fit the tensioner I had purchased. Recently got the necessary bolt so I swapped the tensioner yesterday evening and noticed that upon restart the belt worked its way to the front edge again]
Maybe it's not that unusual, I just didn't know if a previous owner had replaced the tensioner and failed to place a washer where it belonged. I couldn't find any mention in the manuals I have access to, or in the PET diagrams.
This is the first time I have changed the timing belt/tensioner on a 931 and I realize the ramifications if I don't do it properly so I thought I would refer to those more experienced than I.
Thanks for your reply. _________________ 1981 931

I have the same issue with mine after I changed the belt and tensioner, the belt now runs right at the front edge of the pulley. Before it was replace it ran approximately in the centre of the pulley. I have done about 5,000K since the change _________________ 1982 931
