Hi guys, I just got my hands on the factory manual for the transmission volume, but was disapointed in that it only showed the four speed audi one, and having the snailshell on, well I was left with a doubt
Does this factory manual that suppose to go from 1976 to 1982 I belive I saw in pelican parts, should it include all the transsmissions? at least the snail shell or where could I find this I was thinking in the extra one for the turbo but I dont know, maybe some of you guys who already have one can gide me.
thanks guys. |

When the Factory Service Manual was first published it was only 2 volumes. Porsche brings out the Factory Service Manual for each model they are incomplete. Over the years, Supplement are added to fill in missing section, and add material to cover features of new models.
The snail shell tranny did not come out until the fourth model year (1979), so it was not included in the original two volume FSM. The FSM was expanded to Four volume around Supplement 4, if I remember correctly.
The FSM as sold in print by Porsche has included the information you need for about 20 years. What you bought was an original transmission volume from a FSM that was expanded to four volumes, but did not have the Supplement that covers the snail shell tranny. Looking at my FSM, it appears that the material covering the snail shell tranny first appears in Supplement #V dated 1978. Some of the snail shell pages are dated 1980, and Supplement VII.
You need to buy a more up to date FSM, OR the FSM on Porsche Microfiche.
The original 924 FSM was dated 1975 or 1976.
You do realize that many parts for the snail shell trany are NLA, and what is available is VERY EXPENSIVE don't you? It would be much less expensive to convert to a five speed Audi based tranny than to try to attempt to fix yours if broken. |

Yes I have seen all over the forum how hard it is, Im trying to get one on the side and use the manual to try and then fixed up, In Juarez, there are many tool machinist shops, some more competent than others, but yes parts are highly unavailable, but I feel it as a challange, I got hands to a lathe from my fathers, plus, he gave me a hint, not sure but I need to check, He said that an Opel car that he used to have had the same and they look very alike as in the ilustrations the synchros, so Ill check in that to, but I need to see a synchro for the snail shell and compare it to the opel one I have, they seem to have the same teeth and desing just need to check diameter and width,
Thanks for the Info, yes the manual say printed in 1976, I just purschase the whole 4 volume set on just waiting for it to arrive and check that, guess I should have asked first. Hope these work. do you know if the electrical wiring change, I have a 79 N/A so I was also looking and wiring thee car at some sections, the PO did some hackups, so shorts around, I isolated to the internal ligthinh cirquit, so I cut it that one, and the radio, A/C Fog lights, and some others,
I just found the microshift and bougth it, I would Have like to have seen it before but owell, thanks again for the great feed back gohim |
