| the transmission and differential both use the same oil ,so i thought. I figured i would drain the oil from the bottom hex bolt, fill from the side. the book says 2.64 qts of 80w 90 oil. I wanted to see if it was leaking so i opened the top first to see if it was close to the hole and a lot of oil came out. |

Good question. . .my snail didn't hold as much as the manual said, either. I barely got two quarts in there and it started spewing out the fill hole just as you described. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Yeah, you just fill it until extra oil starts coming out then stick the fill plug in quick.
I recently had a G31 tranny on the ground. I pulled the drain plug and about 2 liters of oil came out. Then I tilted the nose of it up at about 30 degrees (well beyond what you could do with it in the car) and another 1/4-1/2 liter came out.
I think it would be hard to overfill. But, there is an air vent on the top that allows for expansion of the oil when things get hot. If you get too much in there, I guess you could get oil out the vent but I've never heard of that happening...
I wouldn't worry about it. Just fill it as much as you can and stick the plug in quick. |

yep, fill plug on the side, drain plug on the bottom..., both 17mm hex.
For future adventurers: ALWAYS remove the FILL plug FIRST, then the drain plug. Those pesky fill plugs have a way of sticking, especially *after* you've drained all the gear oil out |

thats funny you mention that emoore924. Thats what happened to me. I had to make a tool to get the fill plug out because the allan key was bending and I think it broke.
I found 2 17mm bolts and welded them onto a appropriate bolt. I think that bolt even twisted a bit.
Remember to torque the fill plug to the proper specs so you dont have this problem again! _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

I always put anti-seize on the fill pugs as well, makes them easier to remove next time. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Ha, tried the same thing and it just sheared itself apart. Think I cut off a section of allan key, inserted it in an impact socket, breaker bar and used a heatgun on the aluminium around the plug. What a PITA. |

I've been very happy with Redline products in mine, both the racecar and the turbo (street). _________________ Vaughan Scott

Amsoil. It's the ONLY true synthetic on the market. The rest are all dino based, and will overheat and break down far faster.
A bit pricy, but you will run faster, and get better mileage. I have used the product since the mid 70's in many vehicles, and always got superb performance. They make any kind of lubricant you want.
You can find a local dealer/jobber in your yellow pages, or by going to http://www.amsoil.com
Disclaimer: After all these years, I signed up as dealer last night. _________________ Mark
