Ok I normally know about what a 924S is worth. This one however I need a bit of input on.
It is a 1988 924S, looks be be in decent condition with recent water pump, idelers and timing belt serviced. It is black with 5 speed trans. It has just under 100K miles.
I can tell it has the manual mirrors. This might also mean it does not have a sun roof or power windows. I have asked the question with no answer yet.
I have not seen it ... only pictures.
So lets make some assumptions. Decent condition body wise, oh interior faded in rear seat area and seats are likely split in front. Other than that interior is decent.
Oh and here is the reason I am asking the question. It has a salvage/rebuilt title. The reason for this can not be determined. They said their mechanic (who reportedly races 924s) can not determine why the car would have been salvaged. I think it likely threw its timing belt.
Anyway what would a reasonable price be for the car?
Nice 924S with out the salvage title $4K?... with it? _________________ 1982 924

I bought one almost exactly like that a few years back for $1500, it became a track car. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

A black '88 with manual mirrors? Could be an SE. If it has manual windows or a gray pinstripe interior than it is most certainly an SE. Ask him for the option codes under the carpet by the spare tire. I think option code 756(?) is the SE option. That would make it worth a bit more than a normal 924S, but the salvage title takes away alot of the value. If it's running, I'd offer $2k-ish. _________________ Dan.

Yes it sounds like it could be an SE. It has the manual mirror... only on the drivers side. Has manual window cranks (I confirmed this today). They are going to take pictures of the interior but it is "sun worn", faded I would guess. Front and rear seats are in this condition. The drivers seat has the usual split seams.
They are a bit unrealistic on the price they are asking $4500... and keep showing me NADA values in the $5K-$7K range. Of course this is retail value and not private party. Never mind the salvage title.
I guess I will have to let them sit on the car for a while to see that there are not too many people buying weekend cars at this time and on top of that... not to many people who will pay top dollar for a 924S... especially one with a salvage title.
Ah well... would likely make a fun auto-x car.
Thanks

I paid 3,000$ for mine last year and it's a 1988 /w 100k miles, very nice interior, runs great... it's an 8 out of 10 condition wise. I don't think they are worth much more than that. I live in Massachusetts if that makes it any different. _________________ 1988 Blue 924s |

$4500? No way. If it has the M030 sport suspension and the option 220 limited slip, I might would offer $2500 just because of the rarity and fun-factor.
That salvage title would make me very leary, though. I wouldn't necessarily take their mechanics word for the condition of the car. I don't know about where you live, but here in NC, they only issue a salvage title if a car has been totalled in an accident, or flood, or something of the sort. Mechanical failure like a timing belt incident wouldn't qualify. _________________ Dan.

Salvage title in MD is generated when someone has an accident and the insurance repair cost is greater than the value of the car. e.g., your car is hit by someone and your car's bluebook value is $2000. The other person's insurance company inspects and estimates the damage (say a front fender, bumper, bracketry, headlight, labor and paint). If it totals out to 10% over the value of the car, they offer you the bluebook and take the car. If you want it fixed and want to keep it, they offer you bluebook minus 10% and you keep it unfixed. If they take it, they flip it to a body shop for about another 10% of the bluebook value. The body shop will fix it and make some profit on the resale to an unsuspecting new owner. In either case, a salvage title is generated since the insurance company reports the car as totaled.
Not a bad deal for either the original owner or the body shop if it can be fixed for less than the bluebook.
Regards,
Chuck |

Yeah that is what I figured. I used to be one of the people who came out to inspect your cars. I wrote many of them into an early grave due to damage. Lucky for my heart... I never had to do it with a Porsche!
Ah well. I doubt they will come down to $2K any time soon but it seems the agreed value here would be some where beteeen $1500-$2K due to the salvage title?
Again it has faded rear seat tops and faded front seats, cracked dash (as they all do) and split drivers seat.
Would have been a fun auto-x car.... but not for $4500. _________________ 1982 924

So update
I got interior pictures.
It has a dash cover, plastic one.
The shift boot is worn out... leather worn through on top of shifter.
Drivers seat is split on one seam and has a nasty stain on the opposite side.
Rear seat back on the upper surface looks as though some one took a cheese grater to it. All of the outer covering is gone. You can basically see the stuffing.
Door panels are decent.
Carpets look ok if dirty. They should have cleaned the car first ah well.
Anyway... seems this one is a pass since they are asking $4500! _________________ 1982 924

Don't know much about the value. All estimates above seem reasonable. I think everyone here knows $4,500 is way outside of reality given how the condition of that car reads.
However, as to picking it up for a reasonable price... I say figure what you're willing to pay, make sure you have the cash-money available (money talks) and then give the seller a call and giv'em your number; tell them you can give them x-amount in hard currency and to give you a call when they're willing to be reasonable.
It probably won't take longer than a couple of weeks of knock-backs or no calls for the seller to realise they're way off the mark. Then you get the call...
In the meantime, if the seller does manage to sell it to some poor sap for an over-inflated price, well, at least it wasn't you and it's smiles all 'round. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

here is a picture of my 1988, mechanically near perfect, interior is great and repainted exterior at some point.. no major body issues. a ding here and there. IT has the plastic dash cover which looks great, due to the dash is cracked all over the place (typical), has a new leather boot on the shifter. Carpet is 100% nice, passenger seat like new, driver seat bolster is ripped up but now covered. I had to fix the removable roof gears which work flawlessly now, replace a few light bulbs, change the power steering hose out is about all. I bought it for 3000$ in Northeast U.S ( Massachusetts ). It has had 5 timing belt and water pump replacements for just regular maintenance..etc. Great little car! but I wouldn't pay anything more than 3k for even a Pristine one. I'd give mine an 8 out of 10 score and 88's aren't as common with their 160hp 2.5L.

Anyone got spiderwebs for sale? I think they would look great on Shari's car. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I actually want to replace mine with Phone dials.. the spider wheels are just not fun to clean.. plus I've always liked the phone dials. _________________ 1988 Blue 924s |

I have some but they are the 4 bolt style.
I like the flat dish rims for the very reason you note. They are easy to clean . _________________ 1982 924
