As title says, did some searching but could not find the answers... The 88 is stock 944 but as most the yard cut most the wires loom out so was real careful with old to swap everything, but not all matches, not sure if it's the differences in years or motors any help would be great.
1st The 87 924s suppose to have an already ecu to 944 swap (per guy bought it from) don't know year of it and is there something I should look for to make the 88 944 run right?
2nd the fuel rail is not the same with (don't know the names) pumps things are different and fuel connections, I can make them work with some adaptations to lines or should I just bolt the old 924 intake system with the injectors to new motor to match the harnesses?
3rd the there is that dino plug in next to the speed sensors on the bell housing which is not on the 944 motor should I take old one off and put it on new motor or does it matter?
Last the new motor came with 944 full suspension and brakes, I did bottom drop. Should be able to bolt the 944 suspension to it no problems correct? 944 suspension is in better shape than the old stuff and want to just swap it all as long there is not issues.
Here are a few pics of what I'm talking about and any help would be great.
Car had 89k then thru rod (bad, really bad, chunks missing on block but rest is good.) was one owner before and everything was working and maintained before blew up.
Also if anyone needs or wants any parts from old motor let me know will let them go cheap... Just want shipping and a few $ for time if that will help keep more these cars on the road.

That engine in the third picture is out of an early 944... a 1984 to be exact.
To use this engine with your 924S harness, all you will have to do is swap out the AAV (Auxiliary Air Valve) and replace it with your ISV (Idle Stabilizer Valve). This might also require you to use the 924S intake manifold, as they moved some of the vacuum ports around.
[EDIT] I just remembered that the 924S harness has the connector for the AAV, so it will plug in... but it won't work!
Sell/toss the early injectors and rail and use the stuff from your 924S.
The missing sensor in the first picture was a dealer diagnostic tool, and is not needed...
Also, what are your expectations with this engine? There were hundreds of things changed to improve them over the years, almost to the point where you might be better off finding a later engine. While, the early 944's have the much sought after cross-drilled cranks and forged rods, they also had smaller oil pumps, so it's a draw really, in that regard. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

I just want it to run like it should not really looking to spend a lot of $ for upgrades. The person I bought the 944 motor from said it was out of a 1988 so that worries me. Is there serial #s or markings to check that? Will swap the injectors and rail to new motor, just wanted to make sure that wasn't going to cause problems.
Thanks |

Yep, in your first picture you can see the stamp on your '87 block next to where the sensor bracket is... if there is a stamp there on the other engine its not an '88 engine. Those have their stamps near the headers. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

It's in same spot but it is a 43E # which I looked up and is an 84 not the 88 he told me... Also when draining the oil I notice some water in it, not mixed coffee like you see when head is blown and ran with water in oil, more like some water got in the oil somehow. Motor has been in garage since I've had it but not sure if was outside or not with guy I got it from. I'm not sure how water would get in oil since motor was compete and the was a red plug (looked like a factor shop plug) in the intake. I need call the guy and get more info cause if it's head-gasket I want to replace it with motor out and get some my $ back from guy since he said motor was good.

Talked to him said yes was 84, and was 10 yr customer... wasn't in rain but we are in AZ... Said most 944 don't blow head gaskets and said maybe leak from oil cooler or something that was covered back in day with warranty which he said did. I'm going drop motor in will let yah know.
Still mad over and over how this is an 84 (that's good another 50k on it) not 88... anyways. |
