What does the bleeder valve do?

I'm talking about the little translucent plastic thing that the fuel breather line goes through near the filler neck close to where the breather line attaches to the top of the fuel tank. (I had no idea what this was. I'm calling it a bleeder valve because that's what ideola called it in another thread :-] I've quoted that below in case my description isn't as clear as his)

Yeah, on my cars there is a bleeder valve under the filler neck cover (the white plastic piece in the hatch area). I believe this is what the breather line attaches to. I have two tanks removed at home, I'll have to climb up in the rafters to see if I can piece together exactly where it connects. Your car is a bit earlier than mine, so it might be a little different, but if you look at 201-05 in PET it gives you an idea of how things connect.

Possibly a roll over valve, stop the breather emptying the tank if you roll...

Read THIS THREAD over at Pelican. It explains the function of the valve, and also suggests that it could contribute to cracking of our fuel tanks, complete with a remedy.

Worth reading for this purpose alone.

thanks for posting that. Very interesting thread. Not exactly what I wanted to hear though. I'm guessing that's what's wrong on my '80 931.

Does anyone know if you can drop the tank without removing the transmission on snailshell cars? I looks like it could be possible... (wishful thinking?)
