I measured the 924's bolt patterns of the trans and motor and they seem the same(measured with motor and trans still in). As I understand it the transmission is the same as the beetle's with minor differences so I assume if the bell housing has the same bolt pattern I can drop an aircooled motor in the audi's place. As I don't have a beetle to compare it to I don't know for sure. The audi motor runs good but needs a rebuild. I know the boxer engine doesn't have great power but it's dirt cheap to modify and I think it would be trick to pop the hood and see an aircooled flat four with webbers. Hit me back guys I need help.

Here's a pic I made of the concept. roflmao

Won't you then have 5 reverse gears and one forward?
Anyway what does a stock beetle lump make? 55bhp?

Not wanting to stifle innovation but please look somewhere else... If you are doing an engine swap pick somethign with a bit more go! I like the idea, but to get a 1.5l 55bhp lump up to 125 bhp (Std RoW 924) will cost a fortune and be unreliable, fix what you ahve or look at something else.

5 pot audi engine would be a nice in-keeping swap, probably just as much trouble as the bug lump to fit too...

Aside from being too tall and too wide, that sounds like a fantastic transplant candidate. Let us know how it works out.

The Beetle engine does not have the same pattern as the 924. The Beetle shares the pattern with the 914 and 911's. It's round and has 4 bolt holes. It could be an interestine swap.

The engine does turn the correct direction. As far as I know there are only two automotive engines that turn in reverse. The Corvair and one model air cooled Fiat.
