These are gonna be the summer wheels for GEBLASN, which currently has some crappy spiderwebs with winter tires. I'll be getting new rubber for these once the weather breaks, so figured I might as well get them looking halfway decent. Followed Vince's wheel refinishing guide.

Condition as acquired. Pretty dirty, and very dull.

Into the dish... err... parts washer.

After the parts washer. Looks better on top...

...but didn't put a dent in the brake dust on the underside...

...so into the tub for a soak and scrub with scotch brite.

After scrubbing in hot water & dish detergent with scotch brite.

Ready for easy off treatment #1

The lemon scented stuff didn't work for crap (I only tried cuz I had some on hand)

With the heavy duty original easy off, it took me 3 passes for each wheel, 10 minute soaks each pass, and scrubbing off the clearcoat with the scotch brite.

Then a couple of passes with 1500 grit wet sanding, followed by a couple of passes with 2000 grit wet sanding:

Then three passes with the Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish.

I used an applicator, then wiped down with a clean terry, then buffed with an orbital electric buffing wheel.

Finished results. Two down, two to go.

What is your anti-tarnish plan?

I'm guessing it's a weekly application of Mothers Mag Polish.

Unfortunately, that wasn't part of Vince's wheel refinishing how-to. I am concerned about it. I suppose some sort of clear coat is in order.

In any event, I finished the other two wheels tonight, plus the center caps. I'll post updated pix tomorrow.

several applications of a good mag wheel polish will limit tarnishing....the ones i did a few years back still have no oxidation.

Hmmm...good to know!

I need to wash my polishing bonnets before I do any more polishing...the first wheel came out almost mirror like, the last three all have a slightly cloudy appearance compared to the first, and I think it has to do with the bonnets getting loaded up with polishing compound. I'll work on them some more this week. In any event, as promised, here are the next round of photos:

As you'll see in the closeups, I didn't attempt to make the wheels perfect...there are lots of little dings and such that were much deeper than the 1500 grit sandpaper could correct...but they sure look a heckuva lot better than before, and once on the car, I think they'll look fantastic. I also used the same method to clean the center caps, so they have a really nice polished look to match the wheels now. I may even consider hand-painting the logos.
