|
|
So I got her running today. Only one thing... the temp gauge stays in the red(maxed out past the red actually). Also my fans are not kicking on with or without AC cranked up. I was going to start some troubleshooting I found from some other threads but I left it for an hour or so and when I came back the needle on the gauge is still maxed out. Now I didn't pay any attention to the temp gauge before starting her up though i wish now that I had... could the coolant temp be fine(hence the absence of movement from my fans) and just a stuck gauge?
If so what would cause it to stick open.
Little background I just got it back together and running after having the head off to replace the exhaust manifold.
Otherwise I am excited... sounds much better than before... some pics of my manifold and other stuff here

the wire on the sender has fallen off and is touching earth.
As for the fans- join the wires on the temp switch on the radiator.

Lets not confuse the issue.
The fan should still run without a relay (at slow speed). _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

So i did not have the blue/yellow wire on the temp sender, hence the malfunctioning gauge... fans kicked in now as well. Took her out for the maiden voyage and on my way home blew the timing belt! I am an idiot I know... should have changed it... thought about doing it and figured nah it looks fine...
So now I will be getting a new timing belt(along with a new idler I suppose while I am at it).
So as I understand it the 1980 924 NA is NOT an interference engine correct?
I should be fine once I get piston, valve, ignition timing set again?
When I tightened the timing belt I took it to where I could twist it 90 degrees at the mid-span between pulleys... without the proper tool this is the prescribed method right? Of course I have seen no mention of how much force it should take to twist it to 90 I assume this is where the proper tool would come in handy.
So tomorrow I have to figure out how to get the bastard home... was running better than it ever has since I owned it for about 20 minutes though... |

Just a matter of resetting valve timing on an NA. (normally)
Ign timing shouldnt change unless you mess with the dissy. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Definitely get a new idler / tensioning pulley. Just be careful not to over-torque the bolt when installing it, the housing it screws into is aluminum, and easily stripped. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

That technique is highly subjective, and most likely to leave you with a too-tight belt unless you have little girly hands. Go ahead and do it, but don't twist with full force, then re-adjust after running the engine and looking-listening. -If too tight, the belt will whine loudly, if too loose it'll flop around excessively.
Also - rotate the tensioner assembly counterclockwise while tensioning the belt. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Got it fixed today! Took me 25 minutes with a mixed bag of tools sitting in the motel parking lot where it coasted to yesterday. And to top it off she fired immediately and idled smoothly right off the bat... I was pretty fricken happy to not have another fight on my hands. I need to tweak the ignition timing a bit now that I have it home but that felt good to get it fixed where it sat and not worry about pulling or towing it home. Upon reflection I had the timing belt way too tight before, I had taken it to where I couldn't get it past 90 degrees(very tight). The new one is on so the span between gears is just barely taught and I can just barely move it side to side on the top gear a bit. Now that I think about it when I would rev the engine it sounded like a 'crotch rocket' whine
I couldn't get an idler pulley locally(was amazed I could find the belt and be able to pick it up later the same day) so will be ordering a new idler. Now I just need to get some miles on it so I can trust it again before any longer trips. |
