|
|
I'm sure someone posted some tips about refurbishing wheels but I can't find them, not even with google.
Anyway, I went mad and bought 3 sets of phonedials, two 15" and one 16", at a really good price. Some of the wheels just need a good wash but the coating on some of them has been chipped, quite badly on two of the 16".
So, what to do? Should I just sand the chipped ones back to metal and paint or clear-coat them? If I paint them then what sort of paint would be suitable? I'm assuming it would need to be something hard like a 2-pack which means a professional paint job.
Any tips or links greatly appreciated.
Thanks. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Sand lightly, fix ding/curb rash with spot putty (sand again), prime and paint.
Rims shouldn't get THAT hot so a good spray bomb job should do.

Thanks for that. A quick search turned up a few good instructional videos on utube.
I'll give them a clean and see what I've got. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

This US product works best. Easy Off oven cleaner. See if you can get it there. Use it as I specified on this site.
This will take off all the clearcoat and paint if you leave it on too long. You can spray them with high temp paint and then clear coat. No matter what you do you have to clean the rims to perfection. Use what I have stated above. If I could send them via the mail I would. Cost of the product is about 3 US a can.
Take the tires off first. Use this product or any one you can get there. Clean both sides of the rim. Sand the chips out but spread out the sanding so you don't have a gouge. Paint and clear coat. If you fail do it again. Eventually you will get it right. Maybe not for you but keep trying.
Find out if I can mail the product to you and I will sent it. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
