I have a oil temperature sender in te top hole of the carter in my normal 924.

I also want one in my 931 S2, but the hole is used by the oil return line.

Any solutions ? I saw the GT in the original Porsche 924/944/968 book has an oil tmep. gauge, so it is possible to put it else where.

1. Drill and tap another hole in the oil pan
2. Run an oil filter straight-through sandwich adapter

Option 2 doesn't modify your motor, but will require you to run a shorter filter. This is what I'm doing on my 941.

I put mine in the oil filler plug. Just drill and tap, works great.

oil filler plugs are supposed to be replaced periodically. it works ok, but becomes a higher maintenance approach than the two listed above...

Because the good doctor recommends it in the service manual?

I don't know the why part. I presume because like most fasteners the threads over time lose their ability to retain proper tension. I do know that on ALL of my cars, the drain plugs that were in them when I got them were leaking even with new crush washers, so I replaced them all with new plugs, problem solved.

VDO make an oil drain plug with a built in sender for Porsche.

Having now looked at the porsche drain plug i believe the problem is with the head of the drain plug not the thread, the head on the VDO sender is much more substantial and should last the life of the sender unit, I trust this is of assistance
