since the timing and BS belts have a +- on the tensioning specs, is it smarter to tension higher or lower initially?
also, would oil start leaking out profusely say i pulled the crank seal while the engine oil is full?
thanks mucho _________________ 1987 Porsche 924S Black/Black. 5-spd.

Q2-The easy answer. No, oil will not gush out if you replace the seal. Check the oil pump sleeve for ANY seal groove and replace or you will repeat the seal change again very soon.
Q1- +- I have always kept my cam belt "-" very slightly loose. I know this is very debateable. Here is a recent quote from a shop mechanic with 25 years serviceing Porsche.
"Okay, what about that water pump? Well, that little guy got real comfortable cruising along for 30k miles, with its drive belt (timing belt) set at spec. Replacement of that belt causes pump trauma, because an unbelievably tight (pre-stretch) setting is used at installation. Often that super-tight belt places so much lateral pressure against the water pump pulley it kills the pump. I’ve seen this happen in only two days, to a pump that turned smoothly and had no trace of coolant seepage when the belt was replaced."

Steve,
The post is old, Jan. 2004 and is now again being debated in 2008.
I wanted to offer an explanation as to why I adjust my cam belt slightly loose. I also believe that current manufacturing methods of quality Contitech belts-considered the OEM standard- do not need to be initially tightened to stretch. This may not apply to Fenton, Dayco, Gates or other belt makers. I replace the cam belt on my cars every 2 years, mileage not considered. When I check on the belt later, it is more to satisfy my fear I forgot to tighten a nut correctly.
