hey guys. im kinda new, but have been reading this board for a few weeks now. since i bought my 80' 931.

anyway. its been grinding second since i got it to run. not all the time, but sometimes, like if im driving it too hard. well, ive been trying to take it easy.

point is, i was driving home tonight, like shifting at 3k, just driving normal, and took off form a light, went to shift into 2nd, and nothing. it just wont go into gear. there was no grinding no nothing. just no gear. got home, turn it off, and still nothing, wont go at all. starts to, but wont actually go in.

so the question is, whats up. is that gear just done, or is it the linkage (although the linkage isnt really slopy, and all other gears seem fine.) or is it something less serious? and what are my replacement options, im guessin its the snailshell trans right? and yeah, ive read the tech section, but is late, and all of it just isnt sticking yet.

so, any help would be great. thanks guys.

well i had the same problem on my car and it was the bushing on the gearbox at the back that whent then there is too much movement that it will not go into gear.

There's a "sticky" topic about this near the top of the General Discussion forum.
[OK - just noticed you've been there already. ]

so the bushing on the back like out side of the trans? wouldn't all of the other gears be sloppy as well, or at least the shifter?

and if that is the case, what does it take to replace that.

Sounds exactly the same as 2 when i picked up my 24. Was at a set of busy lights near peak hour and all off sudden the gears didnt take at all. Managed to push it into the local pubs parking and left it there till i found a truckie to bring it back for me.
Turns out someone had fiddled around with the cv joints and hadn't tightened them on properly and they basically weren't connected anymore.
I doubt u have the same issue but have a peak.

Hi there
You have 1st, 3rd & 5th correct? Your problem is the coupler bushing at the end of the shift rod where it goes into the trasmission This is the same as used in 914's& I believe 911"s a very common item. the only problem its royal pain in the A$$ to get shift rod out,. You will have to remove the transmission. or cut a access hole in the body under rear seat drivers side on the hump I am not a big fan of that but seen it done that way . If you have Porsche factory manual f check it out on transmission removal instructions very informative
Hope this helps
