My bodywork-repaint has been slowed by various things - mainly a med emergency in the family, my own wrecked sinuses etc. not being compatible with the stinkin' hot humid weather around here lately, etc.
But I've been willing to take on a few smaller parts of the larger project..
Mounting some lights within the front bumper is one - I wanted to do this before painting so the holes cut out of the bumper get painted on their inside edges.
I went with a $20 pair of 55 watt H-3 lights. Just went out with one of the front blinker light assemblies to compare and decide what size to get and wound up with lights that are just bit smaller in height than the 3" turn signals.
Then after a lot of measuring and re-measuring, made and positioned some paper templates, cut out the openings (with a drill, then jig-saw with 10tpi wood cutting blade, files, then used a 4" grinder to grind down the reinforcement ridges on the back of the bumper so the lights could be flush-mounted from behind).
Originally wanted to mount them right next to the turn signals, but then realized that without the rubber piece there, you're left with a gap inboard of the turn signal, so I cut off a section from the opposite end of the rubber piece and positioned the new lights further inboard, between the licence plate and rubber pieces.

very impressive! I personally think it makes the bumper look like it has more of a purpose, wrather than just some giant fat lip on the front of the car. Looks great!

That's the shiznick. I was wondering what to do with my front bumper. Euro pieces are too pricey. I replaced the bumperette's on the rear with molding and it looks a lot better. Now I have an idea for the front. That's why I come here- to pirate ideas! _________________ Shut up fool, those are mine. |

I wonder what it would look like if you had the bumper devoted to flood lights...like a rally car. That way the bumpettes could be deleted.

I too cut out the front bumper to fit in Euro fog lights. I did not cut the holes straight and stopped. If I was successful I would have replaced the rubbers with the Euro as shown on the avatar. I may still do it later.
I have extra Euro bumpers when I change the existing one for track use. Lighter.
Unfortunately no track days this year. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Thanks
Had another hot humid day with thunderstorms as a bonus yesterday, but got some more of this miscellaneous stuff done..
If I had it to do again, would have spaced the lights a bit further out from the licence plate - there was actually another 3/4" space available between the lights and the bumber mounts on each side. As it is, there's no space [actually 1/8"] between each item in/on the bumper, but I still think it works well enough design-wise.
I opted to re-cut and graft the ends back onto the rubber pieces instead of trying to find and use some kind of black rubbery filler/adhesive and hope it matched well enough to not look stupid. Got some nice not perfect, but close enough for me cuts with the radial arm saw, then drilled with a drill press (again not perfect, but close enough) to fit 1/4" steel rods within the rubber to hold them together. Those will be glued in with contact cement or whatever else I come up with when the time comes. The original rusted-out bumperette mounts are being replaced by 1/4"-20 eye-bolts and steel rod inserted through the bottom as shown here -

Smoothie,
That's looking good.
Reminds me of the Euro bumpers. In fact the Euro 924S (I have a US 87-924S) has very cool aero pieces all around. I'd sure like to find a source for these. If I can find the pic I came across recently I'll post it.
Enjoy!

Here is the body work I was referring to. Still haven't determined whether its factory or after-market.

You'll have it much easier than I did if you have a 3" bi-metal hole saw to use. That was quite the time consuming pain in the A to cut rectangular holes with the jigsaw, then file, then grinder..
Actually, another easy alternative that would work for anyone that has and wants to keep the large North American "bumperettes" is to use the smaller round projector-style lights - you could drill through both the bumperette and bumper with a bi-metal hole saw. The bumperette mounts consist of approx. 2" wide steel pieces that are moulded into the rubber, so you have a few inches where they're all rubber between the mounts to run a hole saw through. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. I was thinking it wouldnt be that hard I dint know I need a jig saw..though a hole saw is only about 15.00 tops thats a bi-metal one. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Found a jigsaw at Ace hardware for $21.00 then one for $15.00
at biglots, some metal blades at wal-mart So Ill give it a
go 3 1/4 round holes. the jig saw will be used for my sub
cabinet tops & cutting a vent hole in hood ..I should probably use a dia grinder with a 3" wheel on it for the hood ..
