Good question, I'd like to know this too as my handbrake does almost nothing now. Any diagrams/pictures in locating what needs to be tightened would be helpful as well! _________________ 1988 924S Navy Blue - Phone Dials |

Yeah, unless you have the patience to get only a slight movement of the adjuster with each turn, you're better off removing the seat (with a 1/4" drive socket wrench or else that'll get tedious too).
Whatever you do, do do the drum brake adjustment at the rear wheels first. Sometimes with that done, you'll find the lever doesn't need adjusting - plus it's just the correct way... _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Here's the dumb little gear that you have to turn to tighten the pads at the rear drums. It took me forever to figure out where the thing was. Only realized what needed to turn after I took the whole brake assembly apart!
Push/rotate the gear cogs up or down to adjust the brake pads.

Just to clarify one thing on the adjustment...
The gear mechanism is essentially reversible...I'm not sure if there is a "correct" way to install it, but be aware that during previous disassembly of the brake mechanism, it's possible that the one or both gear mechanisms was installed "backward". It will fit just fine either way, so as far as I can tell, there's no adverse effect on the functioning of the handbrake shoes that sit inside the rear hats on the disc.
The challenge is, there's no easy way to tell which way it's installed without disassembling everything. As a result, you can have one side that requires you turn the gear UP in order to spread the adjusters, and it can be exactly opposite on the other side. When I reassembled mine, I oriented the adjuster on both sides so that moving the gear UP causes the shoes to expand outward and therefore tighten, while moving the gear DOWN cause the shoes to contract inward and therefore loosen. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

My adjusters were idential so one has to go up and one to go down. You will work it out by trial and error, but it takes ages to adjust if it hasn't been done for ages as you only get 1/8 th of a turn each time _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...
