More of the same problem
It's been suggested I need to begin from the mechanical set up for mix and timing. That appears to be open the mix screw fully and close 2 1/2 turns. Close the idle screw and open 2 1/2 turns.
I am concerned the mix screw may not be captive and when I crank it open it'll fall into the air dist chamber.
Also I would like to know about how many turns the screw actually has. There seems to be many.
Unfortunately I've lost the mix setting where the engine will start so I need to get some setting that will make 'er go. At this point I'm a little bit lost.
The bright light at the end will be a sweet running car.

With an ear near the fuel distributor, jumper the fuel pump relay 30-87 (maybe wire yourself up a switch on a long wire with two 1/4" male spade connectors at the opposite end). If you hear fuel rushing through with the air metering plate in the neutral position, the screw is already too far clockwise (too rich), so back it out just until you hear the fuel flow stop. Then back it out another 1/2 turn. Obviously if you don't hear the fuel flow, turn the mix adjustment clockwise until you do, then back it out 1/2 turn.
This should give you a good starting point to get it running.
If it takes more than a few seconds, and much fuel's been squirted into the engine while not running, you'll also need to change the oil. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I made up the cable and tried it out. I could definitely hear sounds I'd not heard before.
Tomorrow when the weather is cooler I'll get 'er goin'
It definitely gave me a starting point.
Thnx

I finally got 'er going and after I chased the idle, mix and timing for 10 minutes it's quite smooth.
I was surprised at how loud the sound from the fuel distributor was when I ran the pump with the switch. Once I got it to run but very poorly, it took several turns of the mix screw to rich to get into the area where it would idle without stalling.
Thanks Smoothie for the help, I'd still be under there without it.
