The question has indeed been answered, many times.
I don't know of anyone who has had a problem running unleaded petrol in the 924 and 924 Turbo. I have been running unleaded petrol in my car since I bought it and haven't had a problem with it. As I understand it, most, if not all, engines with aluminium heads have hardened valve seats. This means that, as a general rule, you can safely run unleaded petrol in engines that have aluminium heads. Certainly seems to be true of the 924 and 924 Turbo.
Octane ratings are different around the world. It seems what we call 98 RON in Australia is equivalent to what the Yanks call 95 PON. See the description here, courtesy of Paul (EDIT: Sorry, looks like Ozzie posted that one, too, earlier on). You can run any grade of petrol you like in your engine. Will the lower grade petrol cause a problem? Difficult to say exactly. In the short term, the lower grade petrol being run through a 924 Turbo engine might cause 'knocking', 'pinging', 'pinking', whatever-ya-wanna-call-it. Over the long term, if this occurs constantly, it can cause major damage to your engine. But if you're getting 93 PON petrol, seems that's roughly the equivalent of 96 or 97 RON, which should be just fine... _________________ '80 924 Turbo

btw, what is the fuel recommendation for a 79 924 NA? _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)
9249206346 - 89k – new shifter bushings, belts, running well.
9249206347 - 8k – waiting its resurrection, no power at the fuel pump and fuse #7 blows w/power |

This chart is courtesy of Ozzie, in this thread.
EDIT: Please note the technical bulletin appears to be British. Seems different countries have different recommendations. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

No problem, hope it works out for you. But please note the following from Paul:
| Paul wrote: | | US 931s with stock boost need only 87 octane according to my 1980 owner's manual. Using 93 actually decreases power and can cause the exhaust manifold to glow. |

Don't recall the conversion from RON to the (R+M)/2 average number (R=RON, Research Octane #, M=MON, Motor Octane #) we use on the pumps here in the US and Can, but the turbos here are perfectly happy on lower octane; I run 89 or 93 all the time without issue (stock boost).
Of course, my CR is only what, 8.0:1?
As for NA's, 87 for stock is fine... again, US/Can numbers. _________________ Vaughan Scott

all i knowq is mine came from canada ,when i rebuild it we pushed up the cr to 8:1 or something like that as it was 7 :1
but i found she was more responsive and much happier on 95 octane , o ya that might be because of the cam that i run as well _________________ Porsche ...where dreams are a reality
