Hi there,

My name is Justin, and I just recently purchased a 1980 924. I admit it was somewhat of an impulse buy, and I had done little to no research before picking up the car. I saw it advertised online for $600us, and had to go see it. It was sitting in the very back of the warehouse at an auction place. I guess the previous owner had donated it to "heritage for the blind" for a tax break. I looked the car over and was stunned to find a straight original body with absolutly no rust. The seats were in decent shape, though the carpets are really nasty. I may have to get those replaced. It also seems to have almost new tires on it. The battery was completely flat dead, and it had no gas. I talked them down to $500 and had them put some fuel in it. After a jump from their big battery charger, the car caught and fired. She runs real smooth, and I can't wait to get her out on the road.

What is the little plastic snorkel thing with the duct tape on it for???

After I got the car home i took her out for a spin around the block, and over to the gas station to get some premium chevron. I parked her, and left the battery on the charger for 2 days. Now she'll crank all day long, but absolutly refuses to start. I think its the fuel pump relay, and i'm looking into that, but I'm in the middle of moving, so the poor thing isn't getting the attention i think it deserves.

I've done the fast American muscle car thing, and the big offroad rock crawler thing, so it'll be interesting to see how i take to the track car bit.

Welcome Justin.

That is part of the duct that connects to the rear alternator shroud for extra cooling. Not really necessary, never had any problems without it myself.

The easiest would be to light sand off the clear. Is the silver good enough to polish up? Much easier to repaint the same color but if you must change it my vote is GUARDS RED.

That car seems to be in honest original condition which is a good thing. I would go for the original factory colour. Any other colour will require engine removal so that you'd be able to paint engine bay area too. Otherwise it's going to look silly.

Seriously, it's you car. Do what you will and be happy with it.

Welcome to the club Justin,
Allot of cleaning some new paint and seat covers (and some fixing) and you have a nice car to drive around the corners . As RC noted that tube goes to the ALT but it looks like the shield on the rear of it is missing so nothing to hook it too.
As for the color; silver seems to crap out allot, black shows the smallest scratch, red says bust me and yellow screams look at me. That said my pick was Blk/Slvr combo, not too flashy and will go nice with your interior.

Always repaint the original colour. As an owner of a car that was painted different colours twice by previous owners, I have come to hate colour changed cars.

Thanks for the welcome and the input on the car. Painting the thing is a ways off, I just wanted to see what people thought. I'll have to look at more pictures and decide really.

Now, the alternator cooling duct... I've never heard of such a thing. Do the alternators in these run hot? Just proximity to the exhaust thats the problem? Is there any reason that running without the cooling ducting could hurt? I don't have the lower part anyway, so I'm thinking about just removing the little plastic duct all together.

Once i get the car running i'm thinking i might wet sand the hood and front cowl piece (between the headlights) to try and remove the peeling clear coat. Then a good polish over the entire thing, and a thick coat of protective wax. I'm hoping that doing so will at least make the car presentable for a while. Anybody have any other ideas on cleaning up he finish to make it last a bit longer?

Porschev would know what you could do with the paint as for the duct, you can remove it, air will still come into the engine bay area, just not be directed downwards, many cars don't have that piece and everything runs fine.

The diodes in Bosch alternators last a lot longer if kept cool.

My hose is off the alternator since minimum 10 years, and never had a problem.....So, do other things first.

looks to be a nice mostly original example, alt was probably replaced and they failed to fix the cooling shroud, no biggie, its a common practice.

as for color, go with what you like. color change can be a pita and allot more work. if it were me, id probably go with a gunmetal or similar gray, close enough to original color not to have to worry about the engine bay, but different enough to make for a nice statement...

Fine choices the 924 and Cherokee XJ 4-door.. I have one of each myself, though the power and fuel consumption are reversed as I have the little 4-cyl in the Jeep, and the turbo version 924 (though I think it's due for a good ultrasonic fuel injector cleaning, and that might fix the fuel consumption..).

My hood and roof looked a lot like yours up until a resto I did in 2006. It all started with stripping the clearcoat, then some more, with a razor blade (175 pics start here for if/when you have too much free time on your hands) -

I went with a roughly similar color for my repaint. Originally, it was Porsche color code "LA6V" Lhasa Green Metallic, then a past repaint about 17-18 years ago was another green, a little darker, then as I found I couldn't get the original color for the lastest repaint, I looked through the color chip books and picked Ford color code "FU" - Dark Green Satin Metallic. It's darker than both of the previous green colors that were on the car.
