Does anyone know if an 016/9 MF out of a 1981 is a direct swap into a 1980 with an 016/9 VR. From the maintenance manual it looks like there are some significant differences in how the shift linkage ties in, but there is only one side shown of each transmission.

Thanks,

Tom Cooper

Looks like it - I don't understand why the shift linkage looks different, can you cite the exact page/diagram number you're looking at that shows a difference?

They should both be Audi-style trannies, same gearing...

Vaughan,

I am looking at pages 30-2a and 30-2b. The salvage yards thinks that an 81 will replace an 80, but according to them there were two styles of 81 transmissions. One is the Audi box and the other is a Grelander box, and they aren't sure which one they have.

I would like to find a direct replacement, that I know will work. If Shane gets back to me with a price that is reasonable, I may be in business.

Thanks,

Tom

OK, looking at the manual now... like the manual as -differs only slightly as far as repair procedures are concerned.

Interchangeable.
