|
|
Hi everyone,
I just finished shocks and struts and was getting ready to tear it apart again to do the control arm bushings.
(space and time constraints are the main reason for not doing this all at once - that and I wanted to take it out for a quick spin with the new parts to see if I could notice much difference)
I bought the red urethane bushings for the rabbit and am planning to seam weld and re-coat the a-arms.
I noticed some people had added or already had grease fittings for these bushings. I checked mine but did not see any there. I wanted to know if these are necesary, recommended or strongly recommended or not really needed?
Any thoughts or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I think it's mainly to make assembly easier, but I could be wrong... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Some bushings make a squeeking sound. That can be fixed with bushinglube.. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

They come with a bit of grease, and are very easy to put together. I think that the people who have done that intend to use the fittings for periodic re-lube.
FWIW, I have run poly front bushings for two years now and never heard a peep out of them. _________________ Toofah King Bad

so, adding the grease fittings is more of an option than a necessity.?
has anyone had a problem with the poly bushings becoming a problem to the point of having to remove them to add grease fittings after ?
for those of you that installed the poly bushings find that you had to take it to a shop to have them removed and installed?
thanks for the help

They install easy. Don't use Weltmeister, use Prothane or similar. Search for Rabbit/Golf Mk I.
The factory ones suck to remove. I took mine to a machine shop. I also had them seam welded and powdercoated while they were off.
Clicakble pics below. PLEASE NOTE REAR BUSH IS BACKWARDS IN THESE PICS!

Very thexthy pix mr. monsta.
Somewhat related question: what balljoint is that? Is it stock 924, stock 944, or did you opt for one of the performance / race upgraded 944 ball joints??? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Rasta, how much did those bushings change the road feel of the car? My 944 may need new control arms or bushings and that looks like an interesting upgrade. Thanks. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor

vw prothane (red ones) are what I bought - Rasta I think I talked to you about those before.
ball joint - oops forgot about that
Is that something that should be replaced as well?
Also are they difficult to change? Expensive?
thanks

Cheap, easy. Drill out the rivets, and then knock the heads off with a chisel. The new joints will come with fasteners. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Mine didn't!
So now I have to source a set of six M7 ( ) bolt and nuts (Nylocs? )... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Should be M6, but some people open up the holes in the arms a bit and use M8. _________________ Toofah King Bad

M6 isn't a problem, but I'm sure I saw in PET that it was M7... I'll check.
I thought about opening the holes out to M8, but I was worried about location; but presumably an alignment takes care of all that at the end of the day...? _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)
