I have a few questions about modifications/upgrades I'd like to make to my 924S. My old 944 had foam in the hood; I'm guessing the purpose was sound insulation? My 924S has no such foam in it and I'm wondering if I should buy some to mount in there. From what I've seen, it's about $60 + shipping for the foam.
Another thing my old 944 had was fog lights, the 924 does not. I actually liked them (more aesthetically than utility I suppose), but I would prefer to maintain the same style that the 944 had with its lights. I believe the nose was different on the 944 (that it could accommodate the lights) and that the 924's nose has no easy way to mount them. Does anyone know if it's possible to mount some fog lights similar to those found in 944's in a 924S without completely replacing the bumper or buying some odd-looking aftermarket lights? Of course, I'd like to control the lights from inside as well (where the switch normally would be), but kind of doubt the 924S has the electronics setup for that (unless Porsche simply used the same electronics kit in all of these cars and disabled parts as needed).
And one last question: I have a bunch of holes in my center console where switches should be. I think it looks pretty awful just having holes and would like to occupy them. Does anyone have a list of the switches that normally occupy those holes and a supplier for replacement switches (even just dummy switches)? My car doesn't have power locks, so the only switches I have are sunroof and power side mirrors (toggle between left and right).
Thanks! If it'll help, I'll post pictures of under my hood and my center console as well. In fact, I should probably just post those to let people take a look at the engine. _________________ 1988 924S Navy Blue - Phone Dials |

Foam on the hood. It's heavy, and it falls apart. But it does protect the paint on the hood from engine heat. If you are going to install it, I would use the foil covered product (think it is made by Dynamat) as it will last longer (I have a set of these foil covered panels in my closet scheduled for installation on my 924S), and it's lighter than the original parts from Porsche.
The 944 nose will fit on a 924 or 924S, but you also have to change to 944 style fenders, and then you would need 944 rear fenders/flares to balance the look of the car. And what would be the point? If you want a 944, sell the 924S and buy a 944.
The 924 and 924S have holes drilled on the bottom of the bumper for mounting foglights. There is also a wiring provision (wire comes through the firewall and terminates), so foglights can easily be added to the car after it left the factory. The factory foglight switch mounts on the center console. There is a blanking plate opposite the the brake warning light. You pop out the blank panel, and insert the foglight switch (same one used on A1 VW Jettas and Rabbits). The simple wiring harness that goes in the car was available from Porsche as a spare part (don't know if it still is), and the price was less than $20). It included the relay socket (no relay), connectors to attach to the aux fuse panel under the dashboard (no switch). The harness for under the hood was also sold seperately, but since all that is required is a heavy gauge wire to supply 12+ from the wire at the firewall/brake booster to the foglights, it is easy to simply run a wire. You could also run a wire to a relay under the hood, and power to the foglights directly to the lights from the battery with the wire from the firewall controlling the relay. This way you get less line loss and more power to the lights, with less strain on the switch.
Some 911s use switches that fit in the same holes. The switch for the rear wiper in normally located here, and I use a switch from 911s that is marked on/off for my alarm valet switch installed here. |

If you're good with a sabresaw and file..
I put some cheapo <$20 driving lights in the alumin[i]um bumper as part of a bodywork-repaint project -
13 pics starting here <click>
Those lights are available with either clear or amber lenses at the local Autozone for about $19. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
