Headlight motor problem..

ok so i woke up this morning and found my car battery completely dead, so i gave it a jump then turned it off and heard a sound from underneath the hood. It was the headlight motor thingy and that cap on the top which is made for twisting was spinning around with headlights closed. so i flipped the switch and it stopped spinning but the headlight wont come up. It seems also like the headlights are not connected to each other so i have to move it manually on each light. so what you gus think happened? i have not played around with it or done any sort of research yet but im working on it....
