Guys,

I am stripping down an engine off a '79 and I have a couple of problems:

Firstly I need a new set of standard bearing shells - I have a set of 0.30 oversized but ideally I don't want to grind the crank as it looks ok. Any ideas where to look?

Secondly the crank bolt is seized! I have had an impact air gun on it for ages and I have also had it hot enough to melt the galvanizing off the washer behind the bolt!

Any ideas?
Help!

Rich

To loosen the front crank bolt I put a breaker bar and socket on it and rotate the motor clockwise till the breaker bar is against the body.
I remove the coil to dist lead then crank the motor with the starter.

*warning.... you do not want the engine to start with a loose or removed crank bolt.

Good idea, problem is its not in a car its a spare. I have tried my 3' breaker bar but it won't budge.

lock the flywheel with a plate and bolts to the block.
use a 3 ft pipe on the breaker bar

I took this approach but locked the flywheel with a piece of angle iron to the engine stand. Worked like a charm.

Give GSF or Euro Car Parts a ring. A set of bearing shells shouldn't be much more than £20!

If you find a source for STD bearings that has them in stock, there are a bunch of other folks here who want them...

Did you ever end up contacting acl? Since according to their email, they had stock.

did you get your front dampner bolt off?if not do you still have the head on?if so just take out a spark plug and with piston in the down stroke start stuffing in some 3/8's rope into the sparkplug hole untill ya cant get anymore in now carefully bring up piston towards top dead center the rope will act against the piston and the head, allowing you to apply as much pressure on the bolt, without doing any damage inturnally.you should be able to break it free then.oh make sure you bring it to top the way you want to take out the bolt or it wont lock up.
