Take off the timing cover and look at the timing belt.
If it's cracking, replace it.
If it's brittle replace it.
If any of the teeth are split, worn, missing, or loose, replace it.
If the tensioner is loose, replace the belt while your in there.
Come to think of it, if it's been a while, the belt only costs $10-$15, and take less than an hour to install.
You alrady have the accessory belts, and the timing cover off, you might as well take care of it while you're in there looking.
And if you're too lazy, and don't mind taking the chance of getting stranded, go ahead and drive on it, until it snaps. I mean you'll get strand somewhere, until you replace the belt (it can be done on the side of the road). But you can't break anything, since the 2.0L engine is non-interference, meaning if the timing belt breaks, the valves won't. |

Do yo have break down cover?
If so sling a timing and alternator belt in the boot and drive around until it goes or you get the urge to change it. A couple of spanners and half an hour will sort it. Can be done alot quicker given practice!! _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

| It goes without saying of course that you must make sure your VALVE TIMING is correct before tightening in the timing belt. Check to see that the smallish dimple on the outside of the camshaft pulley is lined up with the pointer on the timing belt cover, also check that the notch on the v-belt pulley lines up w/ the pointer on the oil pump. And finally tension the belt properly. I follow the haynes manual that says to adjust the belt till you can just barely twist the belt 90 degrees w/ your fingers at the middle of the long side of the belt. |

The timing dimple is on the rear of the cam pulley on my car... the one of the front of the pulley is a mystery but it doesn't work for timing... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...
