OK, I'm getting some odd clunking from the outside rear wheel when applying power around tight corners. Pretty sure the CV's are going.

How long does it take to replace them? Afternoon job?

Also, is there any reason to pick up the complete new driveshafts with CV's already installed? Is there any chance I'll get in there and have to replace the driveshafts anyway? Is it quicker and easier just to swap complete driveshafts which include CV's?

Have you considered repacking them and reversing their directions? You can reverse them rotationally (?) swap inboard for outboard, or both. Red's were clackety, and I did the latter, she is now quiet as a mouse.

Length of the job depends on the condition of the fasteners. Make sure you have a good quality "triple square" bit. If fasteners are new, swapping one axle for another could take as little as ten minutes.

AFAIK, there is little reason to toss the halfshaft unless it's been weakened by an impact.

Thanks Rasta, good to know. I've got an new set of triple squares in the tool box. I tend to go a little overboard with repairs, hence asking about the axles. I may go that route just because I obsess about mechanical things (and not paint). New fasteners also seem like a good idea.

Definitely definitely definitely do not attempt to remove the fasteners without the correct tool. I've seen fasteners with both 6-pt and 12-pt on the SAME CAR. Our own FAQ incorrectly states that you can remove 12-pt fasteners with a 6-pt bit. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS.

(Chrenan, glad you have the correct tool...I'm posting this for the benefit of others who might happen along the post).

I agree with Rasta...with the correct bit and maybe a little PB Blaster, switching them around should be a piece o' cake.

With regard to the CV joints, I too am considering rebuilding mine on the UWB project simply because they're off and it seems like a good thing to do. So it sounds like the bearings, boots and clips are identical on both ends then?

They are the same from left to right. If you guys are both throwing away serviceable CV joints, I will happily take them!

However, if you decide just to service them, EBS has a nice refresh kit with fasteners, boots, circlips, and grease.

Check that the castle nut is tight.

Personally, I much prefer the shafts with the CVs already on them. 10 min swap. That @^#$ CV joint grease is sticky, nasty, gets on everything...

While we're on the topic, I am planning to swap in a 944 suspension (front & rear) that I believe was removed from an '87 944 NA. It has the aluminum rear trailing arms. When I read the posts about 5-lug swaps, it didn't indicate that the rear axles were required, but I am now finding reference to a difference between the CV joints for alu vs. steel trailing arms. Can I use my 931 axle shafts + CV joints, or am I going to need to source a set from a 944? Also, if it matters, this will also have the G31 LSD gearbox.

This info is likely in the PET, just do a little cross referencing.

I've been looking in PET and I can't even find the darn axle shafts. They're not in the transmission section or the rear suspension section. Unless I missed it, which is entirely possible. I'll go look again.

Looks like Illustration 501-10 across all models.

Thanks Rasta...note to self: axle = drive shaft no wonder my search didn't find it!

So is there no way to replace the bearings themselves? All of the 924 2.0L repair kits I've seen appear to only include the clips, boots, and grease. I was more concerned about the bearings...but they're not even called out as a separate part in PET.

Which bearings, the big balls inside the CV? Usually they are fine, it's the inner and outer races that get lose their hardening and get marred up.
