I've always wondered how much it costs to run a car in the US. In the UK ownership costs outside of buying and servicing breaks down like this:
Road tax: £0-400pa (roughly) depending on engine size. Pre '73 exempt, most pay about £200
Insurance: £200-3,000pa (30yrs, £100k car, central London for example - not me. I pay £250 for a 924 CGT, think average is £500)
Parking permit: £100 pa, central London only
Petrol: £4.80 per gallon
Congestion charge: £8 per day, central London only
MOT roadworthiness test: £100-500pa depending on work required
Any big differences to what you pay over there? Anywhere else in the world shocked at how much/little we pay to keep a car on the road? |

OK, lesse... numbers for my '82 931 (not the racecar, it would be cheaper, and we won't talk about my wife's WRX!):
I think I end up paying something like $600/yr for insurance; kept down 'cause I'm married, older (33), and have multiple cars (3) insured, so I get the fleet discount
Vehicle registration is quite cheap, $26/yr I think - roughly equivalent to your road tax, I think, gives me a tab for my plates. Real cheap in MI for old cars (before like '83 or something), after that it's based on car purchase price, prior is based on car weight! So my minivan, an '02, costs $150 or so per year (including personalized plate surcharge).
Gas is about $3.50/gal here, now, also given that I can't use 87 octane in the Turbo.
No parking permits or other charges/fees that I can think of. No vehicle inspections required in MI, thankfully - not emissions or safety! It's a good place to live if you like old cars! Plus there's the chance to further reduce costs with classic insurance, registration, and storage insurance, but as can be seen, the car's pretty cheap anyway... _________________ Vaughan Scott

registration/tags: about $45 a year per vehicle
insurance: about $1800 a year for two vehicles (6 month policies, no tickets or accidents, expensive, but a very good rate for my area believe it or not.)
fuel: about $3.35 per gallon now, annual fuel costs are about $4600.00.
maintenance, about 1000 per year (about $400 in synth oil changes every 3k, $600 in misc.)
cost to run 2 vehicles per year is about 7500.00. cost to run one vehicle would be about a third less, after you figure in the multi vehicle insurance discounts, mileage wouldnt change much, as i commute 110 miles a day round trip. . maybe 5k for one vehicle.
now, if you wanted to live in NY city, more the equivalent to London, you would have to add parking, tolls, additional fuel costs , city taxes.. i would guess 40% more.. but ive been out of ny for a long time now.. i could be under estimating.. _________________ Eric

I was paying about $25/ month for basic liablility but decided to go full coverage this year after having a tree drop a branch on our other daily driver. no sooner did I do so and I cracked the windsheild when I was changing wiper blades. The arm slip out of my hand and walked the windsheild. sure was glad I had full glass coverage. So now my 924S is insured for $7,000 stated value which only runs me about $50/month. So about $600/year but I will be droping liability when it is off the road for the winter so it will be more like $450/year. Yearly inspection costs around $25-30 as I recall. Registration is $45 for two years. Gas is still under $4.00 here in rural NY but I expect it to hit $4.00 by summer time. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit
