I've had the car since February and thought it to be pretty much sorted out when the clutch started slipping during autocross. Talk about a cold slap in the face! At the buyer's inspection and ensuing repairs (lots of hurting 20 year old parts) my mechanic estimated the car to have under 60K miles (odometer still inop) so the clutch slippage comes as a surprise. The engine and trans are tight with no noticable oil leaks.
Here's my question - Since this is a major repair, are there other smart things to do while the driveline is removed? The plan is to keep the car primarily stock and a decent autocrosser. At this point I have many lemons for making some lemonade. This is an opportunity, right? |

If/when the transmission is out, you'd have the opportunity to drop the fuel tank and replace any deteriorated fuel lines and fuel vent lines. Some of the ones that tend to go bad and leave you with fuel smells inside the car after a fill-up, are above the fuel tank and inaccessible without dropping the fuel tank.
Good time also to check and renew if necessary, the rear shift linkage. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Rebush and stiffen front and rear suspension (springs/t-bars), if that is on your future "to-do" list. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Make sure you replace the pilot bearing and the rear engine seals - might as well do it while the clutch is out.
I've been there and feel your pain...welcome to the club.

| Since one end of the cv axles will be loose with the removal of the transmission, I suggest that you pull the cv axles, clean, inspect, and repack the cv joints. |
