|

My 4 speed the other day wouldn't go into reverse without a terrible grind. I had driven it for about an hour so it was nice and warmed up.
Is there a reverse gear synchro?
Would too light of gear oil cause this? I used what haynes recommended, 80w90.
Do I just need another transmission? (This would be what my economic stimulus tax refund would go to.) _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

How's the shift lever? They can wear, develop a lot of play and make it hard to get into reverse. Also try shifting into other gears - 1, 2, before going for reverse - this eliminates any possibility for a little grind when going for R. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. The original stud on the shift lever broke. I welded a bolt onto it. It does need a new shift lever but that will happen when the funds come in.
I tried the shift-to-1st-or-2nd trick but it still didn't help. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Some 5-speeds have a synchro, but I think not all... and I'd be a little surprised if the 4-speeds do. _________________ Vaughan Scott

That being said, I guess my transmission is just old and in need of replacement. I've been on the lookout for a audi-style 5 speed from a 924. Haven't found anything yet but I guess the search is still on. Thanks guys. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Might your clutch be out of adjustment? _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Well, I thought that at first. I just changed the clutch and pressure plate about a month ago (roughly 200 miles). I adjusted everything when I changed it. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Time to check it again, non hydraulic operated clutches usually need adjusted a few hundred miles after replacement. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

are you at a dead stop when you shift into reverse? Mine grinds if I'm rolling a bit.

I changed the pilot bearing when I did the clutch.
I'm at a dead stop when I try to shift. When it's cold it goes into reverse fine. It's when it's warm when I get problems.[/quote] _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...
