Another one, a BMW 320, this happened in Budapest, Hungary, last week. The report said the guy was racing another car, as a result the wife died, 1.5 years old daughter and father/driver survived.

As far as this board goes, street racing is also a bad idea because we'll lose, no offence,...but with our cars it just isn't rational.

I'd like to know how they're defining street racing in different states. In some countries they define it as X speed over the limit. Other places it has to be a competition between two cars. The latter seems pretty difficult to prove - how do you prove intent to race? I can think of many situations where one car doesn't know the other is passing and the passing car has to get past the former car, or where two lanes is reduced to one and a passing car has to make sure he gets ahead without disrupting the speed of the car he's passing. How's the cop supposed to know what the drivers are intending?

I think if we're 50 MPH over the limit - and it's proven so in court - suspension of driver's license for 1 year minimum. Call it whatever you like, and reserve 'racing' for those cases where the cops find a bet for the race has taken place, or written or eyewitness evidence that it was a race. This case in Maryland is a perfect example of racing.

The interesting part about this is that the racing didn't hurt anybody, it was just some guy who drove through the crowd as they walked out into the street for whatever reason (a better view?).

Yeah that IS true - the guy WAS alone!

The street racing was a primary cause of the death of the fans cause the reason they were at the location of the collision was to watch the race - like you mention, to get a better view.

One witness says the Crown Vic's lights were off late at night hmmm.
Yet the driver of the Crown Vic wasn't charged by police.

So odds are this Crown Vic driver was just as was said, just a guy driving down the road.

If the drivers have any conscience at all, they've got a very sad rough emotional life ahead. If the Crown Vic guy wasn't in with the racers, he should sue the racers.

A piece of the puzzle was given in todays' news. The racers apparently left a cloud of tire smoke that blocked visibility for the Crown Vic driver. I'd bet the lights were on initially, but were turned off in an attempt to see better through the smoke..

There's a bit in the new GRM about a guy who was involved in TWO street racing deaths. . .and still no jail.
