|
|
I am looking to upgrade my tires this season. I am currently running P195/60/R15 (not the original
stock P195/65/R15) BFGoodrich Traction T/A H88 ‘s on the back http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Traction+T%2FA+H
and older discontinued Touring T/A H88 on the front. the backs set of Touring T/A s was replace two
or three years ago when one blew.
I did a couple of days at the local Watkins Glen International Track in 2006. Last year I did a road rally
and my first Autocross with the car placing 4th and 5th out of 7 924S competitors. The Tires have
performed well but now the Touring T/A tires are getting worn especially on the outer edge. The
Traction T/A’s still have a good deal of tread but they too are beginning to show wear on the outer edge.
The side walls are also kind of soft on both sets. I believe this is typical with BFGoodrich touring tires. I
run them at the stock pressure specks of 36 rear 29 front and have front aligned to the specks of PCA
publications for helping to reduce wabble.
they are getting to the point where they want to do a little wondering sometimes to the left and sometimes
to the right if you let go of the steering wheel.
I also found out that the steel rims are mismatched. One has a different offset and one has a wabble. the
steel rims came on the car when my friend bought it and when I bought it from him. My guess is that the
original wheels got ruined as the car when bought looked like it may have run up over a curb. I have
rotated the tires several times and re-balanced the wheels to compensate. I have decided it is just time to
get new tires and wheels. So this year I will be looking for a good set of used phone dial rims and some
new rubber.
I am trying to keep my tire budget under $100/tire and want something with a good competitive edge for
wet and dry conditions. True racing tires are out of this year budget and I need wheels that will work well
for daily summer driving too. (Cars is stored for the winter season)
I have looked at the Kumho Ecsta ASX Ultra Performance All-Season which have very similar specks
and reviews as my current BFGoodrich. For 49.00/each they are very reasonably priced. I have read allot
of people like Kumhos.
I am leaning towards Bridgestone. The Potenza RE960AS Pole Position Ultra High Performance All
Seasons
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza+RE960AS+Pole+Position
are availbe in the stock 195/65/15 for $79.00 Each and boast a 40,000 mile tread life. Specks are better
than BFGoodrich and the Kumho Ecsta ASX.
The tire that realty has my attention is the Bridgestone Protenza RE-01R Extreme performance summer
tire
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza+RE-01R
While its only size for 15” rims is 195/50VR15 which is priced a little higher than my budget at $106.00
the specks and reviews are very close to that of the beloved Kumho competition slicks. It’s wet tracking
and hydroplane resistance are also very high. It was rated #1 in its class by Tirerack.com in 2006 and
looks like a heck of a lot of performance for your money.
I put a set of Yokohama Avid TRS’s last year on my Turbo charged Limited Edition PT Cruiser land love
them.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVID+TRZ
They gave it a much nicer sportier feel and greatly improved the handling over the OEM Goodyears. Of
course it seams anything is better than the OEM Goodyear tires that manufactures have been using on
their cars.
I was thinking about the TRZ’s for my 924S but for the money some of these others look like they might
be better for the money. The TRZ does make a nice daily driver however the lower speed rating on the
TRZ’s (118 MPH) Concerns me. The max you can get out of a stock 924S at the local track is 100-110.
With the weight reduction I have planed it might be able to go over 118. My friend has had it up to 120
before at other locations too.
The Yokohama performance tires look nice but are out of my budget. They don’t rank quite as high as
the Bridgestone either.
Has any one here tried either one of these Bridgestone tires? Any thoughts? _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

The Yoki Avid V4s I've been running are pretty nice on the track, IMO. _________________ Toofah King Bad

He linked it from Car Domain.
He should resize it to 120 pixels by 80 pixels, so the threads stay the same size. |

From my experience all of the high end Bridgestone tires are good value. The only reason I moved to Dunlop was because Bridgestone no longer makes the size I need.
I used BS Potenza's for the last 5 years, a few different kinds and they all worked well and were cheaper than the Michelins. |

"Strewth... what happened to your avatar man!?"
I don't know why but my pic wasn't being displayed. It was there last time I was on but when I logged on today it was just an X.
I used the" link to of-site avatar" option under my profile and it displayed the full size image.
I always thought those pics were too small anyways but
I guess it is a bitt over kill. I will see what I can do about bringing it down a bit.
" The Yoki Avid V4s I've been running are pretty nice on the track, IMO." I was looking at those too. Nice tires and 205/55VR15 at $79 each is a good price. I see they placed 1st in the high performance all-season class.
The Bridgestone Ultra High performace All-Season Pole Postion's got third in it's class and has slightly better stats than the Avid V4S for the same price. thats why I was leaning twords bridgestone.
How many miles have you put on the Yoki. a freind told me that they tend to chunk up in autocross but I don't know wich modle he tried. I have also read great reviews on some of the perfornece modles from autocrossers but the highly rated ones go for $150-$200 each. Like I said I love the Yoki AVID TRZ's on my PT. Lots of fun to drive! _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

| A summer tire will ALWAYS get better grip than an All season tire. The summer tire stays in the plus temps while the all season tire must compromise with cold temps. |

I think I read somewhere that Michelin owns StoneBridge now so you could be getting the same componds for half the price. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

| I'm confident that Michelin does not own Bridgestone. They would have a massive conflict of interest in a racing series and that would be expensive. |

nice wide tires where do you get yours? what is best for autocross same size all way around or more rubber in back. was thinking of going with 16 in back and 15 in front or just a wider tire in back. I plan to do the fiberglass D production wide body kit this year or next year.
Just check a couple sites. NEXEN N3000 205 50ZR16 94W XL for $49 each that is a bargin. Do they come in 15"? Didn't see any at the site I checked. How is their tread life. _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

| Have seen no appreciable wear yet. Have noticed a couple of things about these tires,1 they are very quiet. 2 they have fantastic grip in rain (on my car anyway). 3 SUPER grip on launch. Have never had them spin. I dont spend my time trying to do burnouts, but my car does not have LSD and when I tromp the gas mid u-turn these tires dont slip at all. |
