Are you talking about the four black plastic vent inserts?

I've had good success cleaning & reconditioning other automotive plastic parts (Porsche and others) using the 3M Plastic Cleaner product, but haven't tried it specifically on the vent inserts.

Which brings up a related question. I have two sets of black plastic inserts, the ones installed in my 941 (which is based on a 1980 931) and a set I recovered from a 1981 931. The earlier ones are sort of smooth and glossy, while the later ones have more of a satin finish with kind of a texture to them. Any ideas on that? I've been wondering if both sets were OEM, was there a specific difference between series I and series II cars, were there ever aftermarket units available, etc. Any ideas on that?

Mine are the latter, not at all glossy. In looking at them closely, I concluded they weren't smooth because they were shedding material (a fine black dust).

What I was thinking was trying to sand them smooth and then painting them with something. But, I dunno.

Sheesh talk about anal. Mine are on my passenger seat.

Anyway I use the same stuff I use on the rear spoiler. Seems to work.

If I'm remembering correctly, I just sprayed mine with a flat black enamel.
-Shows how much thought went into it...only two years ago and I can barely remember.

No Brainer.

Lexol Vinylex

Same stuff used to remove wax residue from all those black parts (spoiler, mirror trim, nose vents, bumper shrouds, etc.)

Does an INCREDIBLE job.
