I'm trying to figure where the temp. needle on the stock gauge should point when at operating temperature...as mine seems to be acting a bit funny, so it would be nice to have a bit of a reference point.

Needle positions during various conditions would be good, like when idling, cruising on the freeway, around town, ambient temperature, etc...

Thanks guys!!

Normally it sits just inside the outer (upper?) edge of the white box on the left of the gauge.

When I'm sitting in traffic, it gradually climbs to just under half-way on the scale, at which point the fan (single) cuts in and the needle jerks back down to about half-way towards the white box (about 1/3 full-scale, maybe).

Once I'm moving again the needle settles to its normal position.

I've never seen the needle past the half-way mark.

Mine acts the same way but will sit around the first mark on the open road, at idle it will creep up to nearly the red, fan kicks in and it will drop back to half. It will stay around the half way mark in traffic.

i think that this question was asked not long ago.
As it idles its way to a fully warmed up engine it stops at the first white line after the white shape....it sits there if i leave it be or i gently drive it.
During winter it just stays there(first white line) no matter how i drive the car.
In trafic(summer) it climbs to near the middle then fan kicks in...then it points again to the first white line...then it climbs to the midle again...etc etc. If i drive the car hard in the summer it will stay near the middle(but not past it)

Same here.

ITs worth pulling off the connector and cleaning it up with abrasive and dielectric grease (Or vaseline!) might improve things a bit. All resistance based gauges (ie most of them) suffer when corrosion gets into the connectors.

That sounds exactly like mine...I just wasn't sure if that was normal or not... But then again...it's winter over here, and summer in Aus...average day here, it only gets up to about 75F...

And thanks for all of the replies so far, guys!!

ROFL! Yea, I guess that's pretty warm compared to over there...but certainly the 924's cooling system should be able to handle it?

I'm just scared that it will constantly overheat in the summer, as it normally hits triple digits here...and the cooling system will have to cope with all that, AND the AC being on...ugh.

I suppose the condenser fan would be the best way to go...does anybody know of a place online that sells the proper fan? I'm not even sure what to look for, as I've never shopped for cooling fans before...like size-wise, and CFM, amperage...etc... O_O

Thanks guys.

Measure your condensor - go to your nearest FLAPS and get a fan and shroud as big as will fit.
Something like this

Forgive me, Ozzie, but what is FLAPS?

And I used an infrared thermometer to measure various temps in the engine bay today...

It seems to sit at around 194F (showed 2nd mark on temp gauge) and the fans are on...then I noticed that the fan turned off for a minute or two, and the engine temp (measured at thermostat housing) got to around 225F before the fan kicked on again... O_O Then the temp started dropping again...at 225F, the temp gauge needle was sitting at the third bar... Is this normal? Or should my fan be coming on sooner?
