Hey guys,
My father and I just picked this 924turbo up not to long ago as a project car, when we got it it ran but the engine was pretty shot. We are thinking of just getting some new piston rings and see if that helps but If anyone has info on where I can get some pistons that would be great, I live in Southern California so the closer the better!

Search is your friend.
Please share a little more info before we can help...
What CR would you like when done? What's your budget? Have you done any diagnostics like compression or leakdown check. What's your oil look like? Any problems other than rough running? Why do you think you need pistons and not something else?
Assuming pistons are the right "medicine" for whatever ails your car, have you measured the bore to know what size pistons you'll need? When you rebuild an engine, typically you measure the bore (where the piston runs up and down in the block) in three places -- at the top like an "X", then in the middle, and at the bottom. You need a good caliper to do this, or remove the engine, dissasemble it, and give the block to your machinist for examination. He/she can make the needed measurements and tell you what you need for pistons *and* rings.
Nothing personal but what I'm talking about is usually done by someone that has some experience working with motors, someone who has the manual, someone who has some tools and a place to work. Please be sure not to get yourself in over your head because "parts for sale" will be where you sell all the stuff you've taken off and don't know what to do with.
If you're still learning about engines, I would recommend that you buy a 924 Haynes manual before you get too much further. Read it. Then start your rebuild by asking questions here. We're happy to help. |

Sorry, should have posted this in a different spot. so if a mod could move it that would be great.
Im only 18 and this will be my first project, my dad has done several who I am working with. Im not really sure If it is the pistons, we are actually just changing several things that seem to have a lot of ware, excuse me for not knowing much . If he wasn't asleep right now I would ask him exactly what we are looking for. We are in fact going to be removing the engine and from what I believe we will have a machinist look for it at that point.
Other than that, I suppose I am just looking for input on how difficult It would be to find pistons for it. I believe my dad said "We are going to see if we need them." So not sure yet, but he wanted me to start my search early just in the case they were difficult to find.

I'm glad you're still learning, and I sure am, which makes this work exciting. I've asked for advice and information from this discussion group and haven't been reprimanded yet...
Emoore hints that you should know the answer before asking for advice, I'm not sure this makes sense.
There have been discussions about pistons. "NICK" is, I believe, at the centre of piston replacement therapy where VW type 1 pistons have been used successfully. There seems to be an opinion that JE pistons are not worthy, but Troy at ebsracing.com says they've improved. I've been told that Porsche 931 pistons may cost @$600 each.
I myself am in the similar position oftrying to resurect a partial derilict. My non-turbo (924) is a fun car to drive, and fairly pleasant to work on. Keep on keepin' on, you 18 year old!

Because I didn't have an intercooler I rebuilt mine using 7.5:1 compression pistons as was stock for my 1980 year.
I think the CGT or one of those 'better' 924 turbos (GTR? I get all those mixed up) used even less compression, then pumped up the boost.
The 7.5:1 have an offset dish. The others are concentric dishes.
Consider coatings.
Or you can just find some used 7.5:1 pistons and clean them up. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

You can still get any size you want through a Porsche dealer, at least here in the UK but they will cost you a pretty penny, they told me 314 english pounds plus VAT each!
Some people on here also are using Wossner pistons, they're also quite expensive, unless you buy two sets, then they work out at just over a hundred pounds each.
I ended up getting standard size direct from Mahle in Germany, 89 pounds plus VAT each from memory.
I am planning to do the same as you next year with my father's help also, if I can find an engine reasonably priced, and his health improves. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo RHD. 3" > 2.5" Stainless straight-through exhaust. |
