ROLL UP, roll up, guess the run out. Have a go! Every child wins a prize

Guessing games have been popular lately. Thanks to Paul, no one else had a chance at Rastas IC one. But it was easy.

Heres another that takes no skill or mechanical knowledge whatsoever. Just pick a number, bit like BINGO really.

For the more technically minded amongst us, we are speculating on the out of true run out of a near new (HEPU) water pump flange, as measured on the pulley in thousandths of an inch. (mm are also accepted)

Also open to comments regarding these pumps quality. Unsure if they are also an OEM brand but was purchased from a parallel Porsche importer. Not in a Porsche box though, so have a good idea of Gohim`s thoughts.

Open the box and let the game begin.

.0035"

BTW, anyone who would even possess an inferior pump such as this does not deserve to own, ride in, or ever see another Porsche.

Ok, lots of lookers but not many guessers out there.

Bugger. I dont know anything about the brand, but it is made in Germany and not Brazil or China. Bought it from a fairly large Porsche parts supplier/ workshop over the phone without looking at it. Other parts are genuine (in a Porsche box) at less than dealer prices and some are OEM. Thought this was too. Looked OK, and was running it for about 6 months with the stock pulley and never really noticed it was out of true. Only after I made an aluminium pulley did I see the wobble. After careful checking determined it was not my pulley but the pump flange.

So has anyone had experience with HEPU pumps and what do other OEM suppliers like Autohauz AZ carry? What is the genuine Porsche brand?

Neil- the car is a Burago, made in Italy. Has a diecast body and plastic chassis/ interior. Did come with racing stickers but i pulled them off. Has no rear seat so may actually be rather realistic. Was less than $20 at Toyworld about ten years ago. Maybe a friendly toy shop there may be able to chase one up for you. Will try to get another myself one day.

My dial gauge is only calibrated in thou, (thousandths of an inch, 0.001") so that is what the figure is in. A hair is about 2 or 3 thou, a piece of paper around 4. There is 40 thou in a millimeter.

To summarize so far:
Rasta - 3 or make it 4 ?
Benino - 7
Neil - 180
Endwrench - 25

I think I got that right so if you meant something else just correct me.

If you got that from measuring yours, its time for a new one!

So you are measuring the runout at the edge of the water pump pulley, perpendicular to the face of the pulley?

If so, I'll guess .255, any more it would probably throw the belt!

Yea, youre not wrong there!

Yes, thats right.
The WP flange hole centres are on a PCD (pitch circle diameter) of about 60mm, so Radius = 30mm. The pulley was measured at around a R= 55mm so will be roughly two times the flange run out.

Thats over 1/4''. It would probably throw the whole pump and leave a hole in the hood!

No its nowhere near that. Its less than 1mm (40 thou) in fact. So that narrows the field. Quite likely lots of others may be similar, just no one has ever measured it. Only when I installed a home made pulley and spun it I thought WTF. Maybe some people wouldnt care but I didnt want more than a couple of thou run out at 7K.

Roger

PS. Neil and Paul, would you like to resubmit your estimates?

I've seen worse, but of course the pump was leaking!

I was just posting something on the upper limit to see your response....

So I'll add a 0 and round up to 0.026.
