|

If I get time at the weekend, I'll go about fitting a pair of 951 rear shocks to the old girl. 951..., that's a 944 turbo, right? The part number on the shocks starts with 951...
This is what I've found so far: The 951 units are heavier and meatier than the 924 ones. Extending and compressing them by hand, they feel a little 'stiffer', but not a whole lot. Compresed, the 951 units are about 2" - 2 1/2" longer than the 924 ones; extended, they're about 3" - 4" shorter.
The mounting bolt hole at the top is the same as the 924 (M12 clearance), but the one at the bottom is larger. Strange thing is, that it's about 13.9 mm diameter, which is too small for a standard M14 bolt and doesn't correspond to any standard metric size...
Anyhoo, I've had a pair of sleeves machined up by a friend that slide into the bottom eyes and bring the hole diameter down to 12.1 mm for the standard M12 bolt. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

yea...normaly you would need 944 arms too...but i gues making a sleve solves the problem easyer. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

OK, got the buggers on.
Another unforseen issue was that the bottom mount of the 951 units is only 40 mm, whereas the 924 ones have 48 mm mounts. How I found this out was when I tigthened up the bottom nut and found I was distorting the mounting 'cup' in the trailing arm! So a whole pile of large washers was inserted as packing...
I was a bit worried about the suspension bottoming out, as the stroke on the 951 units is only 3", compared with 6" for the 924 ones! So, with the car on the ground, there is less than one inch of wheel travel downwards before the shocks botttom out.
However, on the road I took it over progressively worse bumps, etc (believe me, there's plently to choose from on this island!) and the rear seems perfectly well behaved. I tries pushing around corners as hard as I could and, again, it seemed fine.
One step closer to the Nurburgring! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Great to hear Mike,
Were they Boge? Did you notice much difference in the ride, compared to before?

They were Sachs, same as the original 924 ones. (I missed out on a Boge set on E-Bay )
I thought I could tell a difference at first, but after half an hour's driving, I wasn't so sure... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)
