|

Hey all,
I have been reading the previous posts on best oil, and have one small question.
The engine goes back in tomorrow and hopefully will fire up well
Now since its always HOT over here, I am not sure which oil to go for..
Between March and October it is always approx: 85-110 degrees in the shade. November to Febuary it is around 60-85 degrees in the shade. Or something along those lines..
Its a pretty hot island with not many cold spells, im not sure which grade oil would suit this climate best. Most of the driving will be done between march and october anyway, while in winter it will go out once a week if that (when it finally hits the road!)
Any advice appreciated..

Run a straight non-detergent 30W during break-in.
Then switch to 20W-50 all year long. |

+ 1 gohim. 20 W 50 is the stuff you need.
Gives you high oil pressure at low revs.

Isn't 20W-50 a little too thick for the colder months? Or should I say WAY too thick?
Oil pressure is good to a point, but after that, it just becomes a restriction, and accelerates engine wear on cold starts... _________________ -1977 924, 4-Spd...Gone

Is this a fresh rebuild?
Is it a turbo?

Hey guys,
The engine is officially back in place.. it was a long struggle in a very small garage, but its back in there. Both the mounts are attached and the cross member is bolted up again nicely too.. Ill try and wake up in a few hours to get back down there and bolt up the exhaust, the last couple of bellhousing bolts, and check everything is tightened up properly Then I will start getting all the other bits put back onto the engine.. There was a small fight to get the steering rack connected again at the end but I was sooo out of energy I left it for tomorrow.. Is there a nice trick to this or just the HIT IT HARD WITH A HAMMER thing?
Tigger, the engine had to be pulled because the freeze plugs rotted through and the oilpan gasket was shot. Once it was out it gave me a bit of space to remove any rust in the engine bay and paint it, and also change a few small things on the engine that needed some attention..
Nobbi, the insurance thing.. well I guess im just a bad guy, a really bad guy in the insurance companies eyes.. They are all refusing to insure me on my car for the sole reason that "its a porsche" Its a strange twisted little place over here.. So my fight to find insurance goes on, but in the meantime.. the car will go back together nice and slow All of the companies over here said the minimum age for someone to be insured on a 924 is 25, while one crazily said 35..
Hopefully I will wake up in time to get a bunch more done today
Thanks again for the help guys!

Lazy bastard! You've done practically nothing!
P.S. Why don't you drive it much in the winter? It can't snow there, right? |

Hey neil,
Sure didnt feel like nothing, but now the real progress will soon be made
Steering is all re-connected, new exhaust gasket installed and the exhaust bolted up. The suspension bits are all back together properly, apart from the LHS control arm.
I had to stop there because a tiny sharp spec of metal managed to lodge itself into my eye. I cant seem to move it at all and rinsing it does nothing.. Ill try and get it to budge somehow, otherwise I will just work with that eye closed.. no way am I going to waste one of the only bits of time I have not working on my car!!!!!
ASAIK it has never snowed over here, I dont think it is possible. But the drainage systems are very poor so when it rains over here the roads flood pretty bad.. Thats the reason I wont drive it much in winter. Besides the amount of crap that ends causght up in all the parts of the car when going through the flooded roads is not something I want to put my porkie through.. Here is a snap taken after just 2 hours of rain

Im done for the weekend.
All the Bellhousing bolts are in place, and all that is left to do is fit the exhaust shield connect the clutch wire up the oil pressure guage and start reinstalling the CIS system, change the odd suspect pipe/hose before it goes in. Install the freshly rebuild radiator and it should be ready to fire up
Once it fires up, I will get a new rear section of the exhaust installed and work on the front bumper lights/electrics. I will have questions when it comes to that stage
Hopefully I will manage to get time to do all of this real soon.. between work and my significant other time is extremly limited..

That picture reminds me of parts of northern Athens when it rains for a couple of hours.
Thankfully I am all the way south.

I would get that eye checked immediately. A few years ago my father got a piece of rust in his eye while working on a car, he "let it go until Monday" and by that time {2 days} the eye had started to cover the piece of rust. The doctors had to use a needle to scratch apart the eye and dig the rust out. That and the rust "juice" can't be good for your eye and mey even poison the eye.
Seriously Sparky go get that checked now. How long has it been in there? 9 hours? At least call the hospital and be honest with them, no Macho stuff. |
