I do not have an owners manual for either of my 924's, but I think that I read somewhere that you are supposed to use ATF in the power steering, not regular PS fluid. Is this correct ?? If so I need to flush the 924S since I put the regular stuff in it.

Transmission fluid is correct. MD3 will work.

Better hurry, the PS fluid will eat your rack seals, among other things.

That probably explains why some 924S power steering systems seem fine and some are terrible leakers. My black 87 does not loose a drip ever, while my 88 LeMans, in otherwise great shape, pours on the ground. At some point in their lives, the leakers must have had someone put the wrong stuff in. Some helpful guy at jiffy lube, or maybe the lady who owned the car asked the wrong person what to put in, or whatever. It might have helped if Porsche put (Mercon Dexron ll lll ATF) on the cap.

If they can't read the manual, why read the cap?

That reminds me, I dont even have an owners manual. In fact, I have never even looked in one. I always just went by the shop manual. I need to get an owners manual just for the fun ot it.

All is well that ends well....I flushed the system twice today to get rid of the PS fluid. It was only about 1/8 to 1/10 of the the system fluid, since it was only a "top off". I am just glad to have it out before there was a chance of it causing a problem.

Thanks for all the great advice

Power steering fluid is in most cases ATF.

Both fluids run in similar environments, have similar operating temperatures, and are composed primary of solvents. Both fluids will eat/soften/ruin any unprotected rubber compound suspension bushings, rubber engine or suspension bushing, etc..
