Today we started to replace the timing belt, and tensioner and ran into a bit of confusion. The new tensioner does not appear to be the same part as the one we removed.
The old pulley has a large nut on the face, and the new part seems to require a special tool. Obviously I'm new to the world of car repairs, and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated.

mine looks like the new one...
I guess those holes are meant for inserting a boom-tool to accurately tension the belt.
sidequestion: does anyone know if there are plug&play tension rollers which can tension 'more'... or larger roll...? My head lies 1mm lower (machined engine block) which gives 2mm more play on my belt... _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

The new pulley is the part that superceeded the original part that you removed from your engine.
The new part is also used on watercooled VWs and there is a special tool (about $10-$15) made for adjusting the belt tension. You should be able tool at most decent VW shops, or you can also use a bicycle bottom bracket (crank) tool.
You will need a longer bolt, and a washer to install the new belt tensioner. |

Actually, the bolt needs to be shorter. The VW unit is about 1/2" shorter/thinner due to not having the hex nut adjuster.

i just used a large screwdriver to "lift" the tensioner into position by levering it against the top of water pump, then tightened the center bolt.
also .. i just used some washers to space out the original bolt .. works fine  _________________ 6 bikes, 9 cars, 1 van.... the more you have the less they work. |
