guys I'd like to pose a topic for discussion, what current car (if any) do you consider to be the spiritual successor to the 924? My vote is for the Audi TT. _________________ 82, 5 speed, NA |

Out of curiosity, the all-wheel-drive or the front-wheel-drive TT ? _________________ -White 1987 Porsche 924S (Hawaii)

Pontiac Solstice. Fun, light little car, front engine, watercooled, RWD, curvaceous (Saturn Sky isn't), and even comes in a very fun Turbo form! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Definitely not. The Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky quite obviously follows Ye Olde English school of convertible two seaters i.e. MG, Austin Healy, Triumph, et al... just like the Mazda MX-5 (Miata).

Hmm... In spirit, it's similar; a small, sporty, hatchback-semi-fastback, four(ish)-seater.
Of course, you have the 924's direct decendants; the 944 and 968. But they don't really count, I 'spose, 'cause they're not "current" and they're the same car, in broad terms (though obviously much improved).
But the car that, to me, was most obviously like the 924 at the time it was being sold was the Mazda RX-7. It had out-evolved the 924 by the time the 924 had become the 968, and the RX-7 had become a full-blown 911 rival by the time it was in its last series. But then it spawned the RX-8, which in my opinion, although quite different from the 924 in nearly any measure and certainly not as pretty, seems to me to be similar in "spirit" to the 924.
So I vote the RX-8. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Entry level ( ) Porsche coupe. (Not the Boxster - it's open top.)
Khal and Chris: sorry can't agree. Nothing Japanese can have the same 'spirit' as a Porsche.

i had a chance to check out the cayman at rennsport, i hate to admit it, but i was impressed. has a very similar feel to the 924 just sitting in it, ofcourse the engine is in the wrong place, and i haven't driven one, but overall a very nice p-car and in proportion to the 924 dimensionally.
i m not sure there is a spiritual successor to the 924 (yet) , but id say the cayman is the closest thing out there so far.
i would consider the Japanese makers in the running , but none have the same "spirit", Id agree the supra is probably the closest, maybe even go so far as the celica gt, but both of those were in production when the 924 was still on the market, so they have theyre own spirit and flare, a bit different from the 924 series..
Audis, BMW, Mercedes- totally different flavors... no audis since the 80's have been close enough to call them even cousins in my opinion. _________________ Eric

the rx-8, interesting styling, but possibly more like a japanese style 944 than 924.
the engine is obviously pretty unlike our 2litre as it rev's up to 10000 and combusts the petrol in a slightly diffeent fashion.
but driving it...the tighter PZ version of the RX8 with it's fantastic cornering, neutral steering reminds me more of the 924 than any other car at the moment. _________________ 1983 - 924 (185K miles) - not mint

Nice rose-coloured glasses, fella's!
Everyone conveniently forgets the cynical marketing exercise that is the Cayenne... Porsche "Spirit" at its best! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Front-engined, rear-drive, 2+2 coupes... hmm, lemme see... Oh! You meant it's unique 'cause it's a cheap, slow, noisy bitsa'?!
