What's the purpose of this fuel pipe and plastic fitting that goes across the top of the tank?

The plastic tube functions as an expansion tank. Whether it's absolutely necessary I've wondered about as it is not very much larger than the same length of hose.

I had mine out last year and if it was cracked it would just have been a fuel line going across there.

I have a feeling that the hoses connected to that plastic tube are leaking on my car...I am guessing I will have to drop the tank to replace those lines?

I can smell raw fuel from time to time on a full tank. I know that my sending unit is not leaking because i have lifted the cover when the smell was strong and looked at it. It was dry. If a 1987 924S has the above setup, that may be my problem.

It is very easy to remove the tank.
You just have to remove the transmission and drop the exhaust first.
