I want to redo my cracked dash in my 78 n/a and am looking for some options. I found a place in Indy that I can get sheets of very nice leather and I'm thinking of removing my dash and re-covering it. Has anyone done this before or done something similar? I'm thinking of doing the center console as well and the rest of the interior trim pieces. Any thoughts? Pics would be great.

That looks pretty good, is that your dash or one that they did? I'm not sure if I want to see all the stitches though. I'm hoping that I could get it done in one sheet and not have to see the stitches. What do you think? Thanks for the quick response!!

I wish it was mine. That shot is from their website, and they charge a bloody fortune.

I don't think you'll get that done in one piece unless you grow a special dash-shaped cow.

Leather hides however, are not beyond the average bank account. Seems the last time I checked you could get it off the internet for 1.5 to 2 bucks a sq foot. The hardest part then, is the stitching. I was thinking about taking on the project of doing the whole inside of my car in leather. My plan was to take apart the seat skin stitching with a razor blade and use the old peices as templates. Then cover the dash, console, door panels, door posts, roof, gearshift etc. My only problem, was I never figured out how I was going to stitch professionally without a machine.

so am I being retarded thinking you can get this done in one sheet? I've seen some pretty awesome stuff done with leather on speaker box assemblies and they all had lots of curves to them. They just used a good spray adhesive and some heat (hairdryer) and got it to work out.

I would not try to completely cover a 924 dash in one sheet.

many rental places actually rent commercial grade sewing machines that can stitch leather, the curves on a 924 dash have got to be a pita to get right though. id definitely start with a cheap flannel or something to practice on and make precise patterns. you also have to figure out the clearances to ensure everything fits back together properly.

Though i like leather , im not a big fan of it on the dash, seen to many 928's and other cars with shrinking dash leather and uv eroded stitching. looks great though while in good repair. id rather go for a good quality uv resistant vinyl, the stuff they have now looks and feels like real leather, ive seen some i couldnt tell the difference without smelling it..and its a bit easier to work with (use a normal sewing machine normally) and less expensive, at least most of the time, some can get pricey..

Guys, I emailed the owner of 928 leather shop, since he posts on rennlist all the time. I asked him about the possibility of getting a group buy together on the redone dashes... Unfortunately, its something like 8 hours per dash to do one early style 924 dash, hence the reason the price is as high as it is. I don't think renting a commercial grade sewing machine and trying to sew together some chunks of leather is going to look near as good as what that professional job does.

My advice is too save your pennies and send off an extra dash to them, or try to fiberglass a new one or cover it in suede or something easier to work with.

well that's not exactly the responses I was looking for. So what about another product to use that will get the same look and feel as leather?

Alright fine. You leave me no choice but to use drywall mud. Hell, I'll just mud the whole thing, give it a real "custom" look. But seriously, is there any other companies that anyone knows that does this kind of work other than the 928leathershop?

Any leather suppliers in your area? If there is you could mozie on down there and ask them if any of their regulars might be interested in looking at it. You might find someone who does good work who will do it cheaper.

The split skins are quite soft and easily formable. Also pig skin or sheep skin (sans wool) might be worth considering for the same reason and they're cheaper than cow.

The last time I was in a large leather shop I came out with ideas of a kangaroo or shark skin dash.
