I’ve started looking into engine assemblies on a dead 931 (1981) which had a timing belt issues. I’ve seen some advice on VW flat top pistons, which is intriguing. The valves are my next question: two inlet, two exhaust valves are bent. I assume these are not repairable, so what can you tell me about replacements? They have different part # from a 924, so I also assume they are not interchangeable. Rumblings in the forum indicate high prices ($100 up each) and low availability. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Although I can hear the distant rumblings from the purists here, you should be able to source some generic 9mm valves and have the length and retainer groves machined at a better price than the originals. A good head machine shop will have many blanks to select from that will be of modern superior quality to the Porsche ones. Should also be available in oversizes that can allow your existing guides to be reamed rather than replaced.

If the 931 left the factory with sodium filled valves, I wouldn't deviate from that. . .you don't have to be a purist to shun burned valves. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thinking I'm lazy... I remember coming across the sodium filled valve topic somewhere, but where...? Shortcut? How does one know whether the valve are, or aren't?
I appreciate the feedback, you two! And others, of copurse!

IIRC 80's Volvo and Audi turbo motors have 9mm shafts and sodium-filled valves, so you can ask for blanks for these engines. I guess there's no easy way to tell just by looking at them, though.
Then there's this guy (http://www.80tq.com/EngineDamage.html) who recommends using something other than sodium-filled valves. The pictures are great. |

I believe that European Motorworks (formerly Eurorace) can provide replacement valves for the 931. My planned rebuild calls for new valves, although I don't know the particulars regarding materials.
