Im buying a 1980 Porsche 924 and with any car buy comes the test drive. well, after doing some homework on the car and finding out about the usuall 2.0 L 4 cyl engine, i still thought this car would have some umpf to the gas pedal ( the car i drive now is a 1.4 L 4 cyl and can accel pretty nicely). anyway, i get in the car with the mindset that the extra .6 L and the Dual 40mm Side Draft Dellorto carbs this guy has on there are going to at least perform lie my 1.4L hyundai..... but it didnt. first gear doesnt seem to really MOVE the car at any great speed, and i dont know if it was a gear ratio thing but i dont know... i was expecting a little more. anyway thats my first time in a porsche so im not sure what is standard but whats the deal?

I drive a 1.8L ford laser and when driven hard (which is most of the time) it has decent acceleration. However after i bought my 924 turbo with its 177hp i have kind of neglected my laser
The turbo really makes the difference as i also drive a mates 944 evrey now and then and it doesnt compare to my turbo.
My advice is sell your 924 and buy a low milage turbo. You wont regret it

well your engine must be in bad shape...do you have the 90HP version ?

i've got the 125HP version and it preety much beats new cars up to 150HP.
However the health of my engine has depreciaded in the time of my ownership and now that it has big fat 17" wheels the acceleration is not what it used to be...but still...no car under 100 HP can even stand near me on a straight line.

PS: you forgot to put WHITE...

you need to decide where you want the ump... its not going to be on takeoff in a 924, yull find it a bit higher in the rev range, and you wont have to let up in the twisties.. the 924 n/a isnt a speed demon, but its allot more fun to drive than most other cars, if you learn how to drive it..

Tinman, how is your ignition advance hooked up? This is the number one mistake on carb conversions, and will make the car a total slug.

Stand out from the crowd, but not in a showy way - paint it Kalahari Beige (metallic - code LA1Y)...

wow what a great post turnout guys, thanks. thought id get some feedback. Since i posted last night i got up this morning and had a talk with my dad, who used to be a driving instructor for the Washington D.C. region of the SCCA. Pretty much it came down to the fact that these cars(924's) have a lower power-to-weight ratio than my hyundai which is why i was a little surprised. of course my hyundai weighs practically nothing so... but sweet mother of our lord and savior you guys have no idea how this car sounds. its like a piece of heaven in my ears. the rumble that comes from the exhaust when the revs go up is just insane. i think ill record it to my phone and set it as a ringtone or something

Elitejaso: as for a 924 turbo, ill consider it but it probably wont happen just yet. sounds like a good choice though if i want more get up and go which is what i was really looking for. thats what i liked about my car.

Morghen: im not sure about the horsepower but i think 90 sounds right. and white is the current color of my car so i was going for something diff

924guy: yes youre right, im sure the car will be allot more fun to drive than others. when i drove it, the feel of the wheel and turning without power steering for the first time was a little scary. i drove it around a few "twisties" and it was great. but i guess what i was looking for was just that. more speed in the takeoff range

Rasta: as far as the ignition advace? i dont know what his set up is but what is the optimal setting/setup/calibration etc? the guy works on military aircraft so he has some knowledge in that dept and he probably has it set correctly but now that you mention it its something im going to have to take a look at

hehe smoothie, your a riot. you too paul
mike beige sounds like a good color. do you have a few pics of your car side and front i could look at?. get a feel for the look?

see i was thinking something along the lines of Gunmetal , maybe even a Navy Blue or Electric blue, possibly even black i dunno

I think that is the color of my car. It is a respray by the PO. They did a nice job of jaming everything so the OE yellow doesn't show so I think I will repaint it the same. I like it because it is usually mistaken for a 944 by the uninformed as this was a pretty commen color for them here in the states.

You may just need to tune it a bit. Check plugs & mixture, & +1 to what Rasta has said. Easy to install carbs, not so easy to synch & tune them.

There should be a vacuum line coming from a tin fitting on the side of the distributor. It should be connected to a venturi vacuum port on the body of the carb. If it is plugged, or hooked up somewhere else (manifold port) your car will run like a$$.

Solutions are to hook it up to the right place (may require removing a plug and installing a hose barb on carb vacuum port), send it off to a distributor shop to have it recurved for straight mechanical advance, or switch to computer controlled ignition, as many have done here.
