Hi all,

I have done some searching through past posts and still haven't found much info on this.

I have the castlitized nut off. The problem is with the removal of the drum itself. This car has been sitting unused for about 18 or so years and that drum is not budging. Haynes and the Service Manual say to use an extractor but I have no idea where to find one. Can you guys offer me some advice on a couple of things?

1) First, Where can I find the extractor?
2) Is there some other way I can get this off without the extractor?

Any help you guys can give would be great. I'm trying to get this thing rolling to get it on a trailer and the wheels are totally locked.

Thanks again,

Adam

I use a large 3 armed brake drum puller and an impact gun to turn it.

Make sure that you have the brake shoes fully retracted by turning the two starr wheels all the way in the opposite direction of tightening them. Otherwise the shoes could be sitting inside of wear grooves, or the wear ridge may not let you pull the drums off.

You should also hose a ton of a penetrating lubricant like PB Blaster in from the front on the wheel hub splines, and let it soak overnight or for a day (constantly rewetting) to weaken the rust that is probably on the splines of the brake drum.

I DID IT!!

The beast is rolling again after 20 years!! (Last emissions sticker expired in August on 1987!) Once i got the adjusters back the drum slipped off no problem. I took a good 3-4 hours to get all the adjusters back. three took about 45 min and the last one took forever!

But its done and I hopfully will be picking up the auto-transport tomorrow.

Wish me luck!!

Adam

P.S. - PB Blaster is the BOMB!!

When I did my rear brakes, I re-assembled the adjusters with copper anti-seize grease (sparingly!) to stop then rusting up again. I also put a thin layer on the splines for the drum.

Do your back plates have a full complement of rubber bungs in the inspection holes (4 per side). If not, this is a good place for water to get in!

Nice find, Martini colours, too - pity about the dent in the front wing - er, fender.

Have you tried starting her up?

After sitting for 20 years (w/o being put into proper storage) I didn't even want to try to start it yet. I have no idea what condition the fuel is in or any of the other bits (I'm assuming POOR!) I think I want to start with the fuel system as soon as I have some time.

I'm really excited to be working on this particular car. First car I ever worked on (changed the oil when I was 12 or so)

Well, thats the great thing. My mom bought it in 1977 off the showroom floor (I was 5 and still remember picking it up) and has had it ever since. She unfortunately hadn't been able to drive (due to starting a new business, etc.) it since around 1987 and it sat. She finally said, "Do you want it?" and I said, "YEAH!!"

So I found it in my parents garage and the price was free. Can't beat that!!!
