Does anyone know the secret for taking the flag mirrors apart to paint, with out breaking the mirror?

Thanks,

Tom Cooper

Here's a kind of a how-to on the power mirrors -

Maybe the others attach in the same way? -That's with 3 push-in "Tabs" that're glued to the back of the glass.

Thanks Smoothie, that just confirms what I thought. I was hoping that someone had a trick way of getting the glass to release from the backing plate without breaking the tabs of.

No trick

Take the mirror off, remove the rubber surround and gently pry off the glass. Use a wood paint stick to lift it off. I don't think they are glued. As for painting after you take off the rubber why do you have to take off the Glass? Tape it and spray.

Vince,

Because I am anal about tape lines and the previous color showing through. Casper and Bambi had a slight disagreement about whose road it was Sunday morning, and the mirror that I found to replace the one Bambi took off with is/was gold. Casper of course is white.

I did get the mirror off without breaking it, and have started to repaint. Casper is going to have to go in for major surgery on his driver's side rear quarter panel. He is also going to get a new hood and new front fenders from a 944 donor car.

Incidentally, Bambi is now a wanted felon, leaving the scene of an accident is a felony in this state.

Im anal about paint creeping onto the black trim too.
If you can avoid it easily, why not do it?
Plus, some of those black surrounds are textured just enough to have paint creep right around and under any tape you could put on there

Just make sure you have the type of mirror glass you can just pry off.
If you dont, youre going to have some shattered mirror to pick up before you paint.
I almost did the same thing to a '77 I had. Not the original mirrors of course....

I was driving along the north fork of Long Island last week and hit a med. sized pig. It has many trees and no houses along this strip of road. I stopped and watched as the pig scurried into the woods. Dented the front right fender pretty bad along with the spoiler. Being no one was around I left.

This was over a week ago. Today a Humane Society guy rolls up to the house to give me grief and a lot of questions.

That exact thing happened to me. The pig was of above average intelligence and had memorized my plate, then oinked it to the police.

The answer to any such question is, of course, PISS OFF.
