Hey all,

Looks like Labor day weekend I'll be heading to CT from the Boston area to prep the 77 for transport back to Boston. It has been sitting in a garage without moving or care for about 17 years I believe. In a few weeks a flatbed will be by to pick it up and deliver it. I need to get it rolling before then.

This is my plan.

1) Jack up all four corners and put on jack stands. Obviously, the tires are all shot so pull off the wheels and take them to a local tire shop to get replacements.
Aside 1 - What is a good brand/size of tire to put on stock 4 bolt rims? I have searched and found lots of recommendations but it's a bit overwhelming. I don't need crazy high performance tires, just something, that when the car is running will enhance the enjoyment of the car.
2) Once I have the tires I need to make sure the hub spin. I'm assuming that there is a very good chance that the brakes will be seized/frozen. What is the best method for fixing this so that wheels can be put back on and it can be winched onto a flatbed? Do I just remove all the pads and put everything back together?
3) Once the hubs are spinning, is there anything I need to lubricate at all to assist in its transport?

Anything else anyone can give advice on? What kind of tools should I have with me for this?

Thanks for giving this a read. You guys are great and I'm sure I will have more questions to add!!

Thanks again,

Adam

I would think you could winch it onto the truck even with a tire or two dragging. . .and just pulling it forward it seems likely to break the pads loose.

As for tires, I love the Yokie Avid V4s I am running. Great all-around tires for the price.

Thanks Rasta!!

I think I might try to do something the break them loose but I wont try to kill myself.

Right now the car has some stock tires. I wont to give it something a little bigger but not crazy. I also don't want to mess with the speedo at all and would like to keep it accurate. Im not sure if this is a 77 or a 77.5.

Thanks again

Adam

You might also find the clutch disk is stuck to the flywheel. This happened with my car a few times last year while it was off the road for several months for bodywork and repainting. -And before that for the previous 14 years it'd been in constant use by me as a year-round daily driver. Now that it's back in constant use again, it hasn't happened again.
I had to activate the starter repeatedly each time it needed to be broken loose - the car would buck a bit with each starter activation until it freed itself.
If it is stuck and you can't break it loose, you might still make some progress (slowly) by putting it in 5th gear. -That is, if the engine and brakes aren't frozen.

I just got my 77.5 back on the road after 10+ years so I can appreciate the fun you are about to have. Keep me posted as you go because I'm sure you'll run into many of the same problems as I did. Fuel pressure, vac lines, dried seals and electrical issues seemed to be some of the popular ones. Hope you have an understanding wife!! Cheers.
