ok I went and filled up my tank the other night and the next day it started dripping gas out the fuel tank where 2 electrical wires go into and there is a big nut, tried tightening the nut it just wont get snug, I have a metal pan underneath my car now to catch all the gas. what should i do??? i'm an ok mechanic but dont have the money to take it to a shop. besides nobody in my town will work on a 79 924.

My car used to leak at the same spot as yours (I think the intank pump - if it is on your '79). I got the rubber gasket (sealing ring P/N 928.201.187.02) from the dealer for about $4US. It goes between the intank pump and tank. This has solved my leak. The previous seal just broke apart when pried off. Getting a new seal may help.

yup. I replaced that seal recently. You'll have to drain the tank to replace it. the "big nut" is actually the top of the in tank pump. I drained my tank by jumpering the fuel pump and collecting the gas from the fuel return line in the engine compartment. Then when I removed the hose there wasn't much gas to leak out. I ordered and replaced that S shaped hose between the in tank pump and the high pressure fuel pump while I was at it since it was easy to get to and the tank was already drained. Not a hard job just kind of nasty since you get gas on your hands and stuff. Do it yourself. Way less expensive.

EDIT:
If you use the fuel pump to drain the tank, make sure you turn it off the instant the fuel is done being drained. Running the pump with no fuel in the tank will burn up the fuel pump.

Just to clarify for you - brown is ALWAYS ground.

While you have the pump out, you ought to test it; if you replace the gasket, refill it, then find that the pump is dead, you'll really be hating life, having to drain and remove it again.

Check the resistance across the terminals with an ohmmeter, make sure it's not shorted or an open circuit, then try giving it 12V briefly, see if it buzzes.
