Just bought an 87 924S. Body is in decent shape, but of course the timing belt's broke.
I’ve pulled the head to see the extent of the damage, and I’m surprised that it’s not as bad as I expected; only one valve noticeably bent, probably a few others bent but not noticeably. The tops of the pistons look good - no noticeable dings or gouges. Also, the head and cylinder walls all look fine.
My question is this, I’ve lined up a motor that still runs from a salvage yard for $1000, but I’m wondering if I should just replace all of the valves & guides (~$200-250) and call it a day. Either way, I’ll do the front of engine overhaul.
Any thoughts? _________________ Rich. |

You're better off repairing your own motor with fresh belts, etc. Then you know what you have! _________________ Toofah King Bad

You are not going to get all new original valves and guides replaced for $200-$250. The exhaust valves are sodium filled and cost $50-$100 each. The intakes are about $50-$75 each. Getting ( set of guides, and having them installed is more like $150-$200 minimum.
Buying an engine for $1000, is not just $1000. You also end up replacing the clutch set while the engine out out ($600-$700 for all the parts), and you will have to do the front of engine service while the engine is out (another $600-$1000 minimum for parts). Plus about 10-20 hours labor to install the parts, and then the engine in the car. That makes your $1000 engine, more like $4000.
I suggest that since the head is already out, that you get a competent experienced Porsche Machine Shop to inspect the head, and replace the valves and guides as necessary. They won't all need to be replaced (probably 3-4 valves and the same number of guides). |

Thanks Paul.
I've been to a few other sites that have comparable prices.
Gohim, I know these aren't OEM parts, but I'd rather have a Porsche that runs than a true restoration that costs too much and doesn't run. _________________ Rich. |
