I have purchased a '78 924 and need some help from experts.
So far I have replaced the head gasket, oil, spark plugs and wires, distributer cap and rotor, and timing belt and put it in time. It runs but I am not a machanic and have some questions about basic stuff.
1. My vacuum gauge inside my cabin goes to 10 as soon as I turn on my car. I have went over the diagram and everything looks right. I did NOT go over the ac vacuum portion of the diagram though. Is this ok.?. And what does the vacuum do???
2. Sometimes the porsche turns over very hard when it is cold like I am not getting enough juice from the battery but the battery shows plenty of voltage. It seems like to battery is dead but its not. What should I check.
Any help the experts can give me I will be very grateful.

I think you may have posted in the wrong catagory, but no biggie, anyway's I can't answer all of your questions but the first thing I would do, being that your car is almost 30 years old is to check your grounds. Better yet just clean the crap out of them. That might have some to do with your car sounding like the battery is almost dead.

Vacuum guage is not standard on a 924 NA.

You've already done that and claim you're not a mechanic? Sounds like you are at least well on your way!
As the others have said, clean/replace grounds, and if you're talking about a stock gauge inside your car, it's likely an oil pressure gauge that isn't working because it's shorted to ground - review your wiring. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Finally isolated and maybe fixed why my 931 just developed the pegged oil pressure gauge... when it wasn't pegged, it was floating around at a too-high value.
Well, it was fine when I took it home from work the night before. At home, I pulled the center gauge console out to check the function of the AC temp knob. When I put it back in, some wires must be touching, because that's when it started acting up.
I also noted that wiggling the center console could cause the gauge reading to move around a bit. So this AM I pulled the gauge pod back out, and the reading was fine. After putting the lights back in - as they had pulled or popped out after the previous faulty install - and trying a few attempts, I was able to get the gauge to read properly again.
So either the gauge illumination lights were doing something funky, or there was some other pinched wire in there, but it was able to induce this same behaviour. So in trying to diagnose the pegged oil pressure sender, try also to turn the key on with the gauge pod loose, no wires pinched, see if it reads properly.
In my case, since I knew everything was working fine before, I knew there was virtually no chance that I'd suddenly developed a short to ground in the wire - at least not under the hood.
